What is the big difference between the east and west german lines?   Is there a working difference?
Is one more predominantly working vs show?   And then to muddy the waters even further, where do
the hungarian lines fit and compare regarding workability?

east is over west rules. (No Pun Intended actually figuratively speaking ) whether Show or working...

cheers

Before a war breaks out, flip through old posts, you will find many, many discussions on the differences in lines. As for Hungary, it would depend on the individual breeder and the types they bred for.

Wasn't looking for a war, simply wanted objective input as to the differences between the two in general.

Oh, I know YOU weren't! I was talking about between board members.  The claws come out almost as much as on titled vs. untitled threads.

For working West no question.

for show it doesn't matter, its a show dog

make some popcorn, and look through this thread. There is good info despite some of the arguing. It is a very passionate topic. My pups father is East German imported from Berlin and his mom is American. The breeder I got him from ( Hinterland) has been mixing them for 20 years and has I think wonderful dogs. This is my second from her as my first died at age 9 in May

Could some of you provide the names of noteable East and West kennels and/or dogs?
I'm trying to conceptualize a model of each in my head.  NOT to compare, simply to view differences objectively.

I have read the old threads which were helpful and informative, but many were also opinion ladden as to which is best.  I want to understand specific traits within each.  Thanks for the help.

***I guess I didn't adequately express my intent in the first post....sorry.

Ok, I will bite, mainly because I grew up with the old east german type and cherish them, which would make a little biased too I guess....LOL

Anyways, the west german working type has been bred to specificly look best on a schutzhund field in competition. They are very drivy dogs, work almost completely out of prey drive and are fairly easy to train. But while breeding for high level competitors their structur got a little lost down the road. It appears that many breeders understood that downfall, and breeding now more structural sound dogs again, which can go V but are also nice drivy.

The east german lines are general a bit heavier in bone, with a more massive head. They are now most often of very dark sable color with reddish undercoat (west german lines have a lot of grey undercoat). Even tho they have good prey drive, they are mostly working out of defense drive, which can lead to conflicts in training if you are unable to read your dog or if you try to apply training methods for "one fits all". Temperament wise they are very sound, they are thinkers, and therefor can be very independent in their actions. They are very well rounded dogs and can be used for anything. Healthwise they are very robust, and adjust easy to any climate. Compared to west, their pack drive is higher, and they want to be with their people, they wont do well when banned in the backyard. Structure wise they were big and bold looking. Nowadays many are also V structured. And I want to mention that many of them bring nice round tight paws with extra thick pads. Something that has been lost in many other lines.

I dont know much about Hungarian lines. Just have seen many working in the Pusta, which I didnt care too much for. Today it seems that many kennels imported german showlines and went from there.
