Oh good grief. My son has to do a positional paper on dog bite statistics and how media has overdramatized specific breeds, here are some interesting sites. BTW if any of you have good data sites for his paper, he would appreciate some from other doggie people.

I finally directed my son to peer reviewed and scholarly research articles but even they are a bit biased. Is there anything out there unbiased?

I noticed the differences in "reported percentages of pittbull attacks" Hmmmm

a few years back there was a discussion in this board with stats of bites by breed, If I remember correctly, Labs won the record. It also gave the sites where the info came from. you might try and search this board.

I believe taht about the Labs. I'm a dog groomer and have more Labs and Golden Retrievers that try to bite me than GSDs.
Usually when the owner says the dog is "sensitive" about his hind end being brushed, that means he is going to give me hell, and mean it! Good Luck and I'll try to surf the web and look for something good for ya

As a former--now retired-dog groomer I agree with the doxens.  Also cockers, chis, poodles and scotties were the worst.  I also had my dealings wth goldens and labs.

Thanks all of you. I will pass it on to my son who has taken the position that it is the owners and not the specific breeds, but try and find scientific published research that is peer reviewed and considered a scholarly journal..........whew.  He needs 5 at the least and is having little luck. Might have to write the paper on the lack of accurate research..LOL

The gal who runs this site is very big on just the topics your son needs.  You can contact her from her site.
Her name is Dawn Capp.

Great idea to search in scholarly journals, although most research as you know is always biased to a degree. Sticking to peer reviewed reputable journals certainly will help in reducing some of the bias however.

Not sure how old your son is or what kind of journal access he has, but there are some articles re: bite statistics in journals such as the British Medical Journal, Injury Prevention, (peer reviewed sources) etc. Not sure what kind of data is included in them specifically, but if you are able to access articles via a college or university library database either in person or online, I am quite sure you would find some useful scholarly resources. The librarians can also be a huge help if one is not sure how to conduct a comprehensive journal article search using the large variety of databases available.

Other resources could include government stats site - most of which I would think would be available online by now. Again, a librarian can help with this kind of search.

Good luck - it can be hard to find good solid data on lots of things, let alone on this topic! Let us know if you find any good articles - I would be very interested in reviewing them too!
