Pack mates will serve as honor guard at Aug. 23 service in Port Hueneme

GOODBYE, OLD FRIEND— Earlier in his career, Hasso, a retired military working dog, receives a medallion for meritorious service. After serving his country as an explosives detection dog with tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, 10-year-old Hasso D171 retired to a private home in Westlake Village last February where he continued to do therapy work. Hasso died last month when he was participating in a stem cell research project seeking a cure for Parkinsons disease. Military Working Dog Adoptions finds homes for retired war dogs who are not spoken for by their handlers and would otherwise be euthanized.

I agree with you Bob - and the scientific research may have killed him - unless I'm missing something here. Nice retirement.....

It could've been something simple as an occasional blood sample donation for stem cell research. It doesn't sound like they had him locked in a cage with electrodes hooked into him or anything barbaric.

RIP brave Hasso puppers.

I hope he wasn't kept in a cage and used for that, he would have been better off in a real home living out his life...
I am sad he died, but sadder if he died in a crate or kennel....that way...
Rest in Peace Hasso and THANK YOU for all you did for our country...

Perhaps Hasso was afflicted with Canine Parkinson's?

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080123181351.htm

"Parkinson's disease and epilepsy strike millions of people each year. They also affect countless dogs, and veterinarians at the University of Missouri are working to find ways to treat these and other neurological diseases in both species."

From the article, the dog was retired from the military to a private home.  I can't imagine anyone using their dog in research like that, if it was their pet.
