A conversation with Slamdunc brought this to mind.

What is your favorite training technique for the ever tricky, highly difficult, technically challenging Rocket Recall?

My personal favorite is to run out as fast as I can (not that fast) as far as I can, collapse out of breath from the combination of running (I hate running) and calling my dog, then wave the jute weakly over my head and expell of couple of "oofs" as she runs over me to the jute.

I feel the "oofs" really give her that sense of accomplishment as she springboards off the back of my prone head.

How about the rest of you?

hahhaa Mine is to hold the ball under my chin so that when my dog comes in fast he can easilly grab it when he knocks me on my ass.

Of course the most spectacular I ever saw was a little  guy with the big GSD who would raise his leg and toss the ball under just as the dog came in (for more speed), unfortunately once the dog came in just a tad bit too high, the guy got nutted AND fell on his face..... flashy!

That works!

Though I like to save my dog the trouble and just trip over my own two feet and hit the ground on my own first.

If you strap some bottle rockets to your dog and have a friend light them, he or she will be very explosive on the recall.

Mine would just turn and try to eat them, which would defeat the purpose of the recall.

The method I see is to tease the dog up with a toy then run from the tog as a helper holds the dog back.  After getting a long way from the dog call it as you wave the toy and just before the dog gets to you throw the toy thru your legs behind you.  Eventually you will not thow the toy and the dog will almost mow you over as it arives.

MAR that's a technique I've seen used for a regular recall from a platz out of motion.

I'm talking something a bit sillier, which is the Rocket Recall.  Usually done as a game to see who can get their dog to come fastest, no points for style.  Often you look pretty silly out in the middle of a field jumping up and down and calling yoru dog to come to (and usually 'past') you as quick as possible.
