I cannot beleive what I heard today. My friend, who has a beautiful 3 year old pregnant female, was told by his vet to stop feeding raw food to his dog. The vet said that "raw food" totally stresses the dogs kidneys and they were already stressed due to the pregnancy, so he was to stop feeding this right away. Start feeding commercial dog food with a multi vitamin.  No raw liver, chicken, eggs, etc., this vet basically said no raw food at all! Has anyone ever heard of this?

No.

My breeder feds raw and although I think switches her percentages of RBM, MM and OM around, she still feeds a organic raw meat and fish diet.

The vets will say anything to get you to buy commercial foods.

I was told to feed my then 13 week old puppy a commercial diet when he was stung by a bee.

Umm.. how about not.

He is now 18 weeks and is in amazing shape and healthy as a horse.

My 12 year old (both are Shepherds) has been on a raw diet since she was weaned and has NEVER had any health problems and is going strong.

Vets make me angry some times..

**Tell your friend to find a holistic vet in his area, they may be of better assistance to him than his regular vet.

I am a licensed vet tech and have worked for many vets.  Vets who know anything about nutrition are few and far between!!  I don't know what nutrition they teach in vet schools now, but it was taught by Purina or Hills and was a one day course.  Now what do you think our dogs would be on Puppy Chow? Ooooooooooooooooo(shiver)!!

My dogs eat a good balanced dog food, royal canin, supplemented with meat, bones, etc.  The only thing I would be cautious of.....feeding beef heart.  I use beef heart in the last tri-mester of pregnancy, as it relaxes the uterus.  Raspberry leaves will cause spontaneous abortion in the first tri-mester.  I do use it two weeks prior to delivery to, again, relax the uterus.  I also ALWAYS give prenatal vitamins starting prior to the breeding heat, continuing until 3 months after delivery.  If you feed prenatal vitamins, your puppies will not have PANO!!  You can take that to the bank!!

BTW, did you ask the vet what dogs he breeds, how many litters he has raised and what achievments his dogs had?LOL
Just because they are a vet, doesn't mean they know anything.  Most vets just tell you what they were taught in school, which was out of a textbook.  Wonder what date those books were published!! Questioning minds should ask lots of questions prior to taking advice.

Many vets don't even own a pet!!

Good Luck!!
