Hello,

What is a good diet for a normal healthy 8 week old puppy? I have heard different views on this and was told basically Royal Canin or any similar type food is good from birth to old age.

Is that true or is there a general consensus of what is accepted as a daily food.

Specifically for a GSD? My biggest concern is because I hear GSD's have stomach and/or digestive issues and if so this is something I would like to avoid. Any sharing on this issue is appreciated.

Thanks

Joseph

 Hey Joseph

I also have a new GSD pup of 8weeks old and I find the best to feed her is:
Royal Canin German Shepherd Junior
As it is breed specific it helps with the GSD's very sensitive digestive systems and all tyhe nutritional needs.

Good luck

There are some brands that you can feed from birth, but with  puppies, especially large breed like gsd, you must be careful of "growing" the pup too quickly, that there is neither too much calcium, too little phospherous, and not too much protein.   I used a puppy food formulated for large breeds. I can't remember now if it was Innova, or not, but it was the same manufacturer.  I also used Platinum puppy--it is pricey ($33/11lb bag), but dense and a little goes a long way.

Grain-free foods are good, but be very careful of the protein percentage--avoid those with protein over about 30-35%.   My adult male did fine on a 42% protein feed, but that was far too high a protein content for a puppy.   Growing too quickly put too much stress on their joints and bones.

Hope this helps.

Tharina,

Thanks for the info. I wasnt aware there was a "Royal Canin Junior" and I appreciate you taking time to reply. Thank you.

Good luck with your new puppy as well. Is that him in the picture? Very nice!

Mystere,

Thank you for the details. Is this food available at vets or major retailers? Thanks again for your help!

 Hey Joseph

Yes, it is her in the picture.  You can search for her under: Gabrielle of Kinneret
Uploaded her today, but will load more pics later on.
She really is a pleasure

About the food, I also find with this food that her poop is solid healthy solid stools and she doesn't mess that much either.  I only give her water with the food, no supplements.  Her spoil is those greenie teething bones once a week additional to all her teething toys, she loves them.

Take care and let me know how your puppy does! :)

Have you considered REAL food -- as in fresh, raw food for your puppy?

My dog has been raw fed from 8 weeks -- she'll turn 4 years old this week.

The Innova should be available anywhere that you find premium dog foods.  Platinum can be ordered.  I must mention that when Seattle was hit with an unprecedented amount of snow last December, my dogs and I were snowed in for a week.  I realized that there was not enough dog food to last another week and prepared to venture out 1/2 mile ( all I dared attempt on ice and snow) for whatever I could get at the local Safeway.  I figured generations of dogs had lived on Purina and didn't die immediately, so...   Meanwhile, I went on-line and ordered 66 pounds of Platinum.  Mail was NOT being delivered during those two weeks, but UPS was delivering.  Three days later, we had 66 pounds of 70% human grade chicken premium dog-food!
Their website is www. platinumpetfood.com.

I have been feeding my 5 month old puppy Wellness Large Breed Puppy Health Super5Mix Dog Food . SHe is doing really well on it and the reviews rate it well. http://dogfoodchat.com/dog-food-ratings/ My only issue is when to switch her to adult food. one vet said 2 years, the other said 6 months. I have been reading up on some of the other dog foods, and some of them say not for dogs under 1 year of age.

Mystere,

Thank you very much for the help. The Platinum food looks good enough to eat myself and is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much for taking time out to help me. Thanks to everyone else who commented as well.

Joseph
