Did the police have the right to confiscate this guy's flag? For those who are not aware, flags used to be flown upside down as a distress signal on ships.

1st Amendment applies so answer is no

It's been a hot topic since the 70's. Some saying it's a quiet form of protest, others saying it's desecration of the flag. 1st amendment does day people have the right, though many have tried to limit that right in terms of the US flag.

This has been an ongoing story for the past few months. Flying the flad upside down because the city council denies you a liquor license is a bit extreme but he has the right to do it. This guy has had his flag pole vandalized a number of times and also had protests against him held at his place of business. If more people start flying the flag upside down in protest the gov't will have to pass a law against it.

There have also been heated "listening sessions" in this area the past few weeks about the proposed health care bill which the gov't has labeled as "maunfactured anger." They said the most vocal people at these sessions were just trying to get on the news or a video on youtube. Amazing.
