Over the last several years, there has been much discussion about training the protection phase in the sport of Schutzhund. The use of “training tables” was recently discussed in the Schutzhund USA magazine in a positive manner, however, the article did not provide a step by step training approach to teach the skills necessary for effective behavior modification. Unfortunately, over the years, many have misused tables in a way that the inventor never intended. These well intentioned, but uneducated people, have created controversy surrounding the use of tables in the protection phase of Schutzhund.
Gene England, invented the programs that utilized table training to control the dogs’ environment, thus enabling a helper to present clear boundaries to teach your dog the skills it needs to excel in the protection work phase

I want to first say that we are extremely grateful to Gene England for providing the world with his method of table training. I also want to add that from traveling around the country and around the world and have seen many people do their version of table training they all acknowledge Gene England. With that being said I don't think that Gene England would refer to people that don't do his style of table training as being UNEDUCATED!

I personally don't think this is a way to get people to attend a seminar by such a noted inventor as by belittling other trainers some of which have higher achievement then Gene's. If any of you out there are chess player you know that chess have many different opening. Take the Four Knights Opening. the inventor of that opening had his success then all of a sudden someone else came up with their version of the opening and started kicking the inventor ass. Then another person came up with their version and kicked both their asses and so forth and so on! But it was still the Four Knights Opening.

My points are One: It doesn't matter what Gene or you think how the rest of the world should be doing the table method of training. What matter is they/we have or think they/we are having success. Two: The last time I checked Gene England Table Method of Dog Training wasn't being offered at any college. Last but not least, what better advertising do you need other then the name Gene England? I don't know why you feel the need to blowout other people candles to make his brighter.

I'm sorry the first paragraph is from a flyer that was being sent out by a couple of people putting on the seminar and the rest is my response.

Hey Wallace,

When I was first sent that by someone, I thought a jab was being taken at my article I wrote for USA. I then had a couple people contact me that read it the same way, which told me I wasn't reading it wrong and quite frankly got me pretty hot. As I mentioned in the article, there is no way to cover every step of table training in a 2000 word magazine article and it wasn't meant to; it was only to provoke some thought against all the anti-table talk out there. Most had never seen it done by people that could get results and I wanted to give them food for thought.

I contacted Gene and had a nice conversation with him. He had not read that opening and I read it to him over the phone. He was very apologetic and extremely polite and we had a great conversation. He expressed to me that he did not write that, or think that, and that it was not what he had intended for it to say. Basically someone else had written it and he had not seen it before it was sent out. He said he liked the article and the way Mike and I use the table, we had a great talk, and it ended up being a non-issue between us. He invited me to his Bowling Green seminar and I accepted and look forward to attending.

I know what they probably meant and the type of people it was probably directed to. But I completely agree, the opening paragraph could have been worded much better by whomever wrote it. Gene wouldn't say that.

I am personally very glad that Nate wrote such a positive article on table training for the USA magazine.  Just like any other training aid, the improper application of the table can be just as mis-used as the improper application of the prong collar, e-collar, or leash itself.

Dog trainers should understand what is, and is not, the proper use of any training aid.  I have personally seen "the table" used well so that a dog learns from the experience and emerges stronger of mind because of that experience.

Folks that would paint "the table" with a broad brush of "unacceptable" techniques perhaps are not educated as to how dogs might benefit from judicious application, or perhaps have never seen the table used correctly.

I hope that folks would consider Nate's article and how this training technique might benefit any particular dog if done right.

I'm glad Wallace, Nate and Yvette addressed this advertisement.  I did not think the ad was knocking the article in any way.  I think the article might have been the catalyst for the seminar.  I thought the article was great!  But, I do think you need to see and experience a training technique in person to fully "grasp" the nuances involved.  I think that is the intention of the advertisement and the seminar.

I have never used table training for protection work and I don't know Gene England, yet.  However, on the recommendation of a mutual friend I am going to the seminar to see for myself.  For years I have heard the pros and cons of table training form various people, but I never saw any one do it.  Several people that I truly respect in the sport have told me to go and train with "Gene," and my dog would really benefit.  So when this opportunity came up and knowing some of the people involved I booked a spot.

I'm going with an open mind and I'm sure I'll learn something new.  I'm looking forward to it.

YR, I'm excited about going.  When one of the best trainers and top competitors in the world (IMO) tells me it would be good idea, I didn't have to be asked twice.

We'll see.

Jim, are you going to the one at Rising Star working dog club?

by Tractordriver31 on 08 August 2009 - 13:08

I just contacted one of the clubs and will be attending one of the Gene England Seminar's. Yesterday I got a phone call telling me I should view this post. I had to sign up and give my opinion. I heard the kick off seminar will be in NY next week then in Ga then in NC...If the economy was better I would be at all of them.

I am UNEDUCATED for I have never seen table work done before the way I think it was invented to be used , only in a way I thought was abusive. They couldn't explain to me what and why they where working the dog on the table in that manner, it was their version. Maybe they are the uneducated ones? Hopefully they will go to this seminar and get educated for I would hope this is not the way they where intended to be used.

I am some what of a novice in the sport with hopes to become a helper one day. I don't think the ad that was put out was trying to blow out anyones candle or belittle anyone - but yet light a fire with excitement . Finally the instructions!

I am sure that I will not agree with all that is said at the seminar, but if I can come home and put some knowledge into my equipment bag and give me greater understanding on how to use the tables, will be well worth the trip.

I am very grateful to Nate for his article in USA, for I think this is the start of some great education to come!
