Hey does anyone else bird hunt with their GSD??? This is my second GSD that loves to hunt pheasants and retrieve them without eating them. My very first GSD some 35 yrs ago was awesome...
The Mal, Ruger, does nothing but come along for the ride or walk as it may be, he has flushed a few for me though in some real thick brush.
Brooke, my bitch went last fall, and I was amazed at how she worked the brush. Once she knew she was looking for pheasants, it was so fun, watching her track the running ones...as soon as she came to a thicket where they were holed up, her tail would start flagging like crazy and I knew there was one in there...my boyfriend wouldn't believe it, he hunts his Brittany Spaniels...
Well Brooke was standing between us at the edge of the river bank, in about a foot of snow...his dogs were down the river some...Brooke started getting birdy between us and we were only about 5 feet apart trying to figure out where to cross the ice...suddenly Brooke stuck her nose under the snow and voila, a hen shot out of there right between us...scared the crap out of us...darn I wish it would have been a rooster...
She flushed out lots of hens that day and several roosters. Unfortunately, I only shot 2 of them, but we had a blast...what a nose for hunting that gal has...
Any more experiences???

You actually shot those sweet little birds!
I hope you ate them.

I haven't been bird hunting with any of my GSD's yet but only cause none of my current dogs would be good for it. My little working line female will send out, quarter and take direction very well. I could maybe take her as a flusher but I'd never trust her to retrieve. Too much prey drive and she's made enough kills on the resident ducks around here on her own. I took her rabbit hunting a few times. Didn't shoot any but it was fun and she enjoyed it.
I did have a Dobe once I trained to hunt. He worked as well as any dog I've ever had if not better. More brains than the spaniels and didn't tire like the labs did.

There are correct uses of dogs for certain game.
Anything beyond that is foolishness, and could even be dangerous.
It could be fun to play around with, just leave the gun behind.

There is nothing wrong with taking a GSD hunting if they work...she loves it and it gives them something different from the same old same old and makes them more versatile...I have total control over her out in the field, so what could be dangerous about that??? I run into cougar, wolves and coyotes out there while hunting too and I would rather have my GSD than a Britt, at least the GSD would warn me...
Moons; So what is dangerous and foolish about taking a GSD bird hunting??? If they work, she doesn't have the same pointing style but she doesn't flush till I tell her too...I have a dual purpose hunting GSD...what could be wrong with that???
I bought a Brittany for hunting, but I cannot handle the hyperness, he is driving me crazy!!! Anyone want a good 1 yr old Brittany for hunting??? LOL...I'll keep my GSD anyday, they are more trainable and listen better...and I have a lab pup, I rescued also...she is doing great, we'll see when hunting season comes..

I was not specifically talking about bird hunting, its dangerous to not take hunting serious period.
And its foolish to hunt certain game in the company of a dog period.
I doubt that you'd ever run into Wolves or Coyotes while bird hunting in open country much less even ever see a Lion no matter where you hunt.
Lion dogs are very specialized as are all hunting dogs.
I have seen great hunting dogs, none of them were German Shepherds.
The best use of my dog is locating downed animals, tracking blood trails that go dry.
Not flushing a bird or chasing down a Rabbit.
Its against the law to hunt certain game with dogs also, this includes Deer, Elk, Sheep, Moose and Goats.
And in may states Bear.
I take hunting very seriously, people have accidents, all kinds of accidents while hunting.
Its not a game.

I have been tracked by a cougar coming out of hunting camp in the mountains. I have seen very close up many wolves and several cougar while elk hunting...I live in the Rocky Mountains where there are all kinds of game...and yes, I do not bring my dogs to hunting camp with me, big game that is...
I also hunt big game alone, so I am usually safe from the other hunters. I walk the mountains, most of the other people here road hunt...I go where no one else does, so I always get my game...
I don't hunt squirrel or rabbits, because I don't eat them...so I wouldn't use a dog just to chase them...
Hunting does not have to be dangerous...it is just the other people you have to watch out for...
My GSD has a fairly soft mouth on the pheasants...she seems to know the difference...they are usually filled with shot holes, so if there were a few teeth marks, what would be the difference...pre-tenderization!!!!
