I just wanted to say how proud I am of my 9.5 mo girl.  Previously we had crated her when we left her alone because, well once she tried to eat the carpet when we were gone for 14 minutes.  She seems to have gotten over her separation anxiety so we decided to bite the bullet last Saturday.  We left her alone, out of crate for 6.5 hours while we were gone.  We came home to no puddles or piles (which we didn't expect because she just doesn't have accidents) but most importantly...there was no sign of chewing on anything!  The sofa was intact, as was the carpet and the woodwork!!  She greeted us calmly (gasp!) at the door when we returned.  No jumping, crying or anything.  I'm not sure how to feel.  I love the maturing young dog that I can now trust when I'm away but, sniff...I miss my puppy!  That and I was hoping for a new sofa!

Anyway, I'm sure there are others on here that know what I mean when I say I am so proud!

Congratulations. What a good trustworthy girl.  My last GSD who died in May had very good house manners and we had trained him to stay off the furniture. Whenever we came home all was in place and he was at the door to greet us.  I used to say he was better behaved then my children. Last summer one of my sons put a web cam in the living room before we went to work. He later came to  my office and said " Look Mom" and there was my big GSD snoozing on the couch!  When I got home a few hours later he was right at the front door as always!

I have a 3.5 year old rescue that will go nutz the moment she cannot see us.............

Count your blessings and give your girl a hug for the rust of us, that was a job well done.

careful, I had one that was also perfect but as time went on and he got use to  being out, he found all kinds of things to chew and none of them were his toys!

Snaiper69,

Thanks!  That's the way I look at it too.  You have to be able to live with them!

Shepherdpal,

I hear ya, my grandmother had a Boston terrier who wouldn't go near the furniture while they were home but there was always a suspiciously warm spot on the bed when they came back....hmmm, maybe I should be checking for warm spots.

We close all the doors in the house so she is limited to the kitchen, living room and hallway so that helps keep her out of trouble.  She has also been sleeping outside the crate at night for several months with no problems.  She wakes me when she is ready to go out or needs to potty.  She is a pretty good alarm clock.

Sitasmom,

The first dog I can remember was a mutt we got as a puppy when I was about 6.  Bootsie was fine in the house as long as someone else was with her, even an infant sleeping in the crib was good enough.  But if we forgot to make sure she went out before we left there was hell to pay.  It wasn't that she wanted to go with us, she just was terrified to be in the house alone.  She ruined sooooo many drapes, sheers and woodwork, it's a wonder my mom didn't kill her.  She ruined all the solid doors to the outside, all the window sills she could reach.  She gnawed away so much wood on one window frame that you could see the corner of the glass in the hole she made.  Mom always felt bad that Bootsie was so upset but it stll made her mad that the damage was done.  For a little dog, Bootsie did major damage.  The only way to fix it was to replace the wood.  Couldn't buff it out and repaint!  So yes, I'm counting my blessings but we will see how it goes.

1doggie2,

I'm sure one day when we come home we will find something that we would consider a no-no.  Luckily my husband is retired so during the day she is out.  It is rare we leave home for any length of time that we don't take her.  I will be keeping my fingers crossed that she continues to behave and that if she does misbehave, it will be the sofa that goes down!

Hi Deb, for me being able to leave a dog loose in the house is a very big deal.  Sabin has a calm button, so Jami follows with calm. They are by themselves about twice per week. Concrates!
Always,
Cee

MaggieMae,

Too funny!  When my husband sees this he will insist we get her trained for cleaning up as well.

GSLover123,

I'm sure the house is safe while we our out.  Good neighborhood, watchful neighbors and Echo has already kicked into protection mode.  We're working on teaching her when it's ok to sound the alarm...we really don't need to know when the neighbor is taking her trash to the curb...LOL

Malshep,

Thanks!  It's a big deal to us too.
