Sunsilver

I  heard the following story this week. It's both funny and sad, and I'm posting it here to show how ignorant the general public can be when it comes to dog breeding.

I need to give a bit of background on this first. Back in the '60's a lady named Tina Barber began to breed her own strain of GSD under the Shiloh Shepherd kennel name. All were AKC registered GSD's, though she favoured the oversized dogs with long coats. Around 1990, she split with the kennel club, and formerd her own breed, the Shiloh Shepherd. Her first outcross was to a dog named Samson, who was a mix of giant malemute and GSD. She did only a couple of breedings to this dog, then never used any malemute blood in her program again. All subsequent outcrosses were to different kinds of GSD's, and were only done often enough to prevent inbreeding depression of her small gene pool. All dogs have been carefully registered and tracked under the ISSR (International Shiloh Shepherd Registry) since she broke with the AKC.

So, last week, a Shiloh owner was out walking her dog, and met a lady, who asked what sort of dog she had.

"It's a Shiloh Shepherd," she replied.

"Oh, I have a Shiloh, too!"

"What registry is it with?" [There are several different registries, as some breeders have split with Tina.]

The woman says nothing, but looks confused.

"Does it have papers?"

"No, it doesn't."

"How do you know it's a Shiloh, then?"

"Oh, because it's a cross between a GSD and a malemute!"

Bob, that's my other big beef: the people who continue to cross their Shilohs to GSD's, and STILL think they qualify as Shiloh Shepherds, leading a lot of people to think Shilohs are just long-haired, oversized GSD's!  IT AIN'T SO!  They've been two separate breeds since 1990.

:knows Bob doesn't like Shilohs:

:knows that "Ya shiloa shepherd, you can,t fix stupid..." was likely a sly dig at the breed:

:wonders when Bob is going to learn to spell 'Shiloh' and stop substituting commas for apostrophes:

:looks at his profession of undying love with suspicion.....:

LOL!

It's okay, Bob, I'm not going to insult your favourite breed by confusing it with a 'Shiloa', but that doesn't mean you have to love me...  I'll settle for liking me, or maybe even 'best friends', okay?
