Hello. Pups are now almost 3 weeks. They have been in our large walk in closet with a large whelping box and ex-pen so that mom can move away if too hot. We are looking toward the weaning process as it will be approaching shortly.
We are wondering whether you are using the whelping box as part of the weaning pen setup - would there not be a heightened risk of "contamination" should anyone get giardia or coccidia etc? Would the box then be contaminated for the next litter?
We are thinking of using an expen that has 8 2 foot panels with a door. At one end I will put a tray with papers and wood shavings for potty time. Will this be enough room for all pups plus mom for night time and feeding? Do I need a separate "bed" area? Would a wire crate filled with soft bedding that is attached to the ex pen be a good idea? (I do not however want mom in there by herself as the pups will then NOT have room to nurse :(
How often do pups get coccidia or the like in a non kennel situation? Do I need to assume that they will get affected?
What cleaning supplies are you using for the weaning pen area and how often are you finding you must clean? Can a bleach solution be utilized?
Any tips regarding the weaning process?
I think that's it for now.
TIA

Your a long way from weaning.
Unless mom has a problem do not worry about contamination, (coccidia, giardia), keep her away from trash and the toilet bowl. If she's going outside make sure its a clean environment. These things can be treated later.
Mom should be cleaning up after the puppies but that wont last, you'll need lots of news paper, and some rubber gloves.
Mom needs to be able to come and go, a divider she can get over thats high enough to hold the puppies.
Keep bleach away from the puppies, clean up with soap and water.
Sounds like your in need of some real one on one in person help from someone who's got some experience with raising puppies.
And your probably going to need more room.
I would never attempt raising puppies indoors, A/C or not your gonna need some fresh air.
I dunno.

I sent you a pm . I won't raise pups outside,,so there Moons...I disagree, but I am a breeder and have a special building set up for a nursery with whelpiing boxes and puppy weaning pens...so I do no count....lol
I would not raise a litter in my house either...smell is outrageous...Get puppies on wire bottom . you can build a wire insert for any cage you have some one has to meadure and make a scale on paper of bottom of crate or pen and then use rabbit wire and make a picture fram with 1" x 1" tp slip into the bottom so that puppies do not walk on all the mess....and mom doesnt fit into that.....
Two Moons.: There is a reason for early wheping at this point....so you are not aware of all the reasoning bhind this....some pups that are very agressive cannot be left together after 3 , 4 5 weeks old....no two litters are the same...
People need to have this all planned out way before the litter is born....I am glad to help so just pm me back , Kaomt, when you get my pm.....
Zeigenfarm : I know I read ya....loud and clear / just be patient../ I got it covered....
