my male gsd from the weinereau line died of sudden cardiac death at 2 years and 3 weeks old. they said from the necropsy probable arrythmias. has anyone ever heard of this. i was mortified. he was a beautiful and good dog, with not a hint of being sick. he always ate well, grew big and beautiful. i just don't get it.

Goldielox, I am very sorry about your loss. It is never easy at any age and seems so unfair for a dog who was barely an adult. Young and middle-aged canines do not normally die from sudden heart failure, but it does happen - and it happens without warning. I am not sure that any particular line has a tendency towards heart failure.
I do not think there is anything you could have done to avert this. Sometimes life is just not fair.
My Deepest Condolences,
Bob-O

The same thing happened to me, my best buddy in the world was 2 years and 10 days old. Interestingly enough, he went back to Jello Weinerau, linebred Fedor Arminius. He was my very best friend and it took me years to get over. We did not do a necropsy so we never knew for certain why he dropped dead, but I found out after his death his litter brother died at 7 months of heart failure, and I suspect that in his untimely death. My dog, too, was hale and healthy, no signs of any illness up until his death. I know the shock all too well, and the bitter unfairness of it. Hang in there.

I too am very sorry for your loss, this also happens in young human athletes. It still does not help the pain you are going through, but doing a post will help others. Understand that you gave your dog the best care, the best food, and lots of love, for the short time they had with you.
Always,
Cee

I am so sorry for your loss. What a terrible tragedy. Would you mind sharing the pedigree of your dog. I have heard of this before and wonder if it's the same bloodlines.
