I have an 8 1/2 year old GSD who has just been diagnosed with SIBO with a high probability of IBD.  Quick background, my boy started having GI issues around the age of 18 months.  His symptoms have been chronic diarrhea, vomiting and weightloss.  At this time, he has lost a total of 23 lbs (from 94 to 71).  I finally found a vet who was willing to do tests to find out the WHY instead of just treating the symptoms.  We have been going through different lab tests the past few months and the cobalamine and folate test results is what decided the diagnosis.  We are starting my dog on Tylan powder for this.  I can pick it up Sunday from the vet.  I was mainly wondering how long the a container of Tylan lasts on average.  I'm not too worried about shopping around for the price because my vet will match prices.  Any help with this question would be great.

You can buy Tylan powder over the internet more cheaply than you vet's likely price.

One bottle should last many months.

Are you absolutely sure your dog doesn't have EPI?

OK, I tried to post this already and I have no idea where it went.  My dog definately does not have EPI.  He was tested about 1 1/2 months ago and his result was 7.2.  It was a low normal, but normal just the same.  As far as the Tylan, my vet will match any price as long as I bring a copy of the price elsewhere.  He is very good about pricematching and keeping costs down (except for prescription Science Diet!).  Oh yeah, he is now permanently on Science Diet i/d.

If your dog's Cob. level was down, I would ask your vet about B12 shots too.  My dog has EPI with SIBO on and off and it lowered her B12 reading.  They can't absord B12 and must be supplemented with shots.  Tell your vet to get in touch with TAMU about the B12 reccomendations.  The shots have made a huge inprovement in my dogs SIBO bouts.

Just found a link for the B12 rec. from TAMU:

Forward or print this out for your vet.

His B12 level was actually perfect but his Folate level is what tipped the vet off.  He actually had all of his labs done at Texas A&M.  I'm lucky that TAMU happens to be our referral lab and we are only about 2 hours away.
