Thank you to everyone that replied. Sorry that I didn't reply sooner. We went back to our trainer. Our dog is doing better but is still pretty mean at night. We have always used an e collar. He is not nuetered. He has always stayed in the house with us. He's never been left outside alone. When we go to training he is a completely different dog imn front of the trainer. We are very happy with his progress, but we would still like to know why he is so bad at night. He wants to tear out of the crate at everyone. So bad that the crate comes off the floor. Maybe it is his eyes, we have an appointment to get them checked. His pedigree is listed as Kaiser vom derby holland land on this site. I am not interested in selling him.

If you have a dog chiropracter in your area have his neck and back checked out. I had a puppy that someone dropped on its head at 5 weeks old when they came to look at her. She was fine before and turned mean after, SHE WAS HURTING, I took her to a vet to get xrays to find out where the hurt was and they told me there was nothing wrong except I didn't know how to control my pup...shitty vet....I have worked with police dogs, etc, anyhow, they refused to do the xray so I took her to the chiropractor, without them, we did 3 treatments and some acupuncture, after the first treatment she was 90% better, her axis was way out...and she was in terrible pain!!!!
She recovered and was the best natured pup....See if you can get yours checked out, just a possibility...

I'm curious at how he responds to the e-collar. If it doesn't seem to be helping, it may actually be making the situation worse. Some dogs get more aggressive to any aversive stimuli.

I prefer not to comment on what the trainer has done to make such a big difference as I don't know the whole story.

Do you correct him with the collar when he is in the crate and/or at night? He has learned to connect the crate and the time of day with something very unpleasant so he may be reacting out of pure anticipation at this point.

Odd that his litter mate has such a wildly different temperament. How do you account for that? If she was ill-tempered, you might say it could be genetic.

What other types of corrections do you use besides the e-collar? Have you used a prong collar on him, too? Some dogs don't do well with these tools, or if they are used improperly. I use crates alot and my shepherds go in and out of theirs on their own - when they want quiet time. I have used crating to calm an agitated dog down. I have never seen a situation like yours. It sounds quite disturbing.

Please describe what you mean when he wants to tear out of the crate at night at people. ( I am going to assume he is fine after he is out of his crate) Maybe do a video and post it.
Always,
Cee

Did you correct the dog with an e-collar to stop it from whining in the crate?
