just wondering why his hair is sooo thin?? he is 8 months solid black and i can see his skin
A LOT. as if he doesn't have an undercoat???
 anyone??
is it because he is solid black and it's easier to see the skin threw??? never owned a black? it's his legs his chest isn't too thick. the top of his back is nice and thick. maybe his adult coat hasn't come in fully???

do you keep the dog inside or outside?

what it is the temp?

had he just blown coat, and not yet replaced the old undercoat yet?

does it smell bad

does it  have flakey skin?

is this a long coated dog? or is its fur very short?

what do you feed him?  sounds like poor skin/coat maybe due to allergies.  Is he itchy?

We had to learn the hard way that our girl is allergic to seafood products in the majority of dog foods (even premium ones). Her skin was blotchy, her coat was simply AWFUL (thin, shedding like crazy, spots where tufts were missing), and she was unbearably ITCHY 24/7. She also could never put on weight, although that could've been due to her developmental stage at the time (she was a year old). We put her on Natural Balance's Venison & Sweet Potato LID (limited ingredient diet) kibble (also comes in canned). It has no fish at all, flax seed oil is used in place of salmon oil for Omega3's, and her coat, skin and weight has improved by 500%.

his coat  is gorgeous. he never itches. i do give him all kinds of salmon oil, eggs, raw meats. i live in New york so it's been nice outside.
he eats timberwolf lamb and apples.
i didn't notice him blowing his coat. this is definitely his adult coat.

Sounds like he has a minimal undercoat. Baden is this way and he sheds 1/5th of what my other dogs do. Enjoy the easy cleanup. If you can't get over it, send him to me and I'll deal with him. LOL

A current photo please, the puppy pictures are cute and he looks to have a nice coat at that age,  but we can't see what it's like now.  Anyway, he probably hasn't grown in all his undercoat everywhere yet, and you know it's always thicker/longer in some places than others anyways.  I  wouldn't lose any sleep over it  if he were my dog.

I have a 6 month old black shepherd and we went through a similar problem. His coat seemed really thin, we could see his skin around his back on his belly, hind legs and chest. He was very itchy, all the time. I dont know if he was allergic to anything, but after switching his food, his coat has grown back nice and lush and has stopped scratched as much as well as put on healthy weight as he was very skinny.
