How often do you worm your dogs ?
And do you do anything about the surrounding environment when you do?
Do you ever use bleach ?
If not what do you use?

I know, too boring.
What if you were going to marry your dog, would you want the dog wormed first?
What kind of wormer would you recommend?
How often would you repeat the worming?
What would you do to prevent further problems?

Hi Moons,
The subject of parasites is far from boring...haven't we been dealing with one for the last week or so?\
As for worming, my vet recommends pyrantel (sp), and said that worming should be done frequently with young puppies, as they pick up parasites more readily.
Of course, some wormers are more effective than others, and I wonder where the breeders are right now?
Can we worm the forum? What would we use for that?
Common sense would flush a lot of them...Might need a common sense nuke to get rid of paleworms, though.

I wormed the puppies with Panicure, well the vet did anyway.
Moved the nursery Kennel to new ground.
But I will be bleaching and spraying the other kennels this year.
I would like to rotate all my kennels but haven't got the space, haven't got enough flat ground actually.
I usually worm adults in early winter, this year I will worm them again and treat the kennels.
Something about this summer so far.
All of my dogs are doing fine, I'm just feeling like a good house cleaning I guess.
The Paleworms are large enough you can see them, and easily stepped on with rubber boots.
Then cover the ground with gasoline and light a match to it.

Ah, the old burning treatment. It's effective on all sorts of vermin.
But stepping on paleworms with rubber boots? They'd be like jumping on a water bed mattress, hard to pop, and I'd be scared of getting some on me when they popped. How would you get that off? I'd think a bleach bath would be in order.
On the subject of canine worms, though...
I wonder if DE would be effective against the eggs and worms?

DE would not work in my soil.
Plus because of the forest and all the wildlife fighting off mother nature here is futile.
Best for me to just keep the spaces I do control clean.
If I piss off the insects here they will take me in the night and I'll never be heard from again.
Fire is the natural way of controlling these things but we can't have that of course.
Burn the boots when your done.

Usually if you have your dogs around others or take them into areas that other dogs have gone before :) love that line, you would want to do a fecal sample check three to four times a year. The majority of the times the heartworm preventative dogs are on nowadays, helps with cross contaimation. So maybe twice a year. I do not like to use wormers unless there is a reason. Panacur (fenbendazole) is a very safe wormer to use. Cestex or Droncit for tape worms. Keep the dogs free of fleas and yes keep the environment clean. It has been a very long week, talking to members of this board brightened my day today.
Always,
Cee
