The AKC minimum breeding age is 9 months and the minimum breeding age (for females) according to the SV in Germany is 18 months. So where does the 24 month minimum breeding age come from and why?

OFA ? Requested 24 months ..Not mandatory IN the USA ! Ethics ?? I am not sure about Germany ,but that over there things are mandatory .

I cannot believe someone ask it  either....but we have a lot of Americans living in a fog   daily ... I think it is the chemicals in the food they eat.

DUH
Breeders that follow the rules of good ethics,,do not breed a german shepherds , that number one:

are  still a baby , undeveloped , in reproductive system at ages you mention above, and number 2:  Hips and elbow ratings are not acceptible until    24 months of age....READ  OFA  .requirements.You cannot submit a certifiable rating of hips until age   24 months of age...

...AKC is a commercial registry not the organization to take references of how to breed...They are a CASH COW> ONLY

Most bitches are not old enough in maturity to take proper care of a litter properly at  even 18mos old.. In Germany there are Breed WARDENS  also.

I am asking if there are any health issues breeding younger than 24 months and have any studies been done?

The only issue is maturity and health.
Knowing you have something worth breeding and that its healthy is just being responsible.
Takes time.

Of course there are health issues....study dogs and study reproductive systems  go talk to a reproductive vet..not a normal vet..

Any bitch that is still a baby inside is not healty....WOULD YOU BREED YOUR DAUGHTER AT 14 YEARS OLD....??????
iT TEARS THE SYSTEM DOWN WHEN A BIRTH MOM HAS PUPS....TAKES 6 MONTHS TO RECOVER...WHY SUBJECT A PUPPY ...?????

YOU ARE ASKING A QUESTION THAT TAKE COMMON SENSE RIGHT OUT OF THE KITCHEN..I SOUGHT OUT BREEDERS HERE IN USA THAT WERE GERMAN SHEPHERD TOP BREEDERS FOR ADVICE....Jane Steffenhagen for one....RIP....

.. LETS SEE WHAT MOLLY HAS TO SAY.......BREEDERS CAN TELL YOU WHAT BREEDING TOO YOUNG CAN DO...WHY DO YOU NEED A STUDY.?

GOD GAVE ME A BRAIN AND GAVE ME COMMON SENSE..
I GOT ADVICE FROM MANY TOP BREEDERS IN THE USA BEFORE I EVER STARTED...MOST OF THEM WOULD NOT  WASTE TIME ON THIS DATABASE AND YOU WON'T FIND THEM HERE EITHER...VETS DON'T EVEN TELL YOU THE TRUTH ABOUT HEALTH OF A TOO YOUNG BITCH BECAUSE IT IS ALL ABOUT      MONEY...GO AHEAD AND BREED A YOUNG FEMALE UNDER THE AGE OF 24 MONTHS AND MAYBE YOU WILL AND MAYBE YOU MAY NOT KNOW TILL SHE IS 4 yrs   AND ALL THE PROBLEMS IN THE PUPS YOU SOLD AND YOUR BITCH SHOW UP.....THERE ISNT ENOUGH ROOM HERE TO TELL YOU WHAT CAN HAPPEN....THE PUPS ARE THE POOR RECIPIENTS OF THE BREEDING TOO YOUNG,,,AND THESE DEFECTS SOMETIMES DON'T SHOW UP TILL LATER AND NO ONE KNOWS   WHERE THEY ALL CAME FROM.

.REPUTABLE BREEDERS WARN AGAINST THIS KIND OF ABUSE...AND IT IS ABUSE....Is the female trained to strict obedience and is a controlled animal with great temperament at 24 months old???  hats off to anyone that can achieve that under 24 months...titles are good but the dog has to have good training and why in the world would you take a puppy's puppyhood away just to have puppies... The reason we have so  many  poor quality germans in our country is because people just breed what and when they want with no regard to rules of ethics..In Germany, they use to have breed wardens with strict rules..They inspect the litter and tell you what you can and cannot breed and do...You have to cull pups also.... Americans have a box of defects and don't even know they have defects because they buy two gsd and breed.......grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr not knowing what they are doing..They ask no mentors for advice...glad at least you are asking...hope you heed the advice.

I base the importance of 24 months on OFA results,  a GSD is still maturing up to three years.

P.S.
I have seen plenty of young dogs give birth just fine, thats not what its about.
