Hi all,
I'm wanting opinions about how you get your young dogs to look at you while doing obedience. My pup is way more interested in other things even when I have treats in my hand. I have high hopes for this pup and I need his obedience to be flashy and happy.

Here is a good site with information on free heeling: http://www.mohnwiese.de/
Click on "training" in the column on the left hand side, then click on english or german, then click on "free heeling". This is good because it teaches your dog what correct body position is and is pretty fun to do with puppies.
Personally I don't train a seperate "look" or "watch me" command, but many people do, it's all a matter of what works for you and your dog.

If you over feed it then you may have a problem, if it likes its food then use it as a tool to get it to look and pay attention to you,Over fed dogs are nor fit and healthy dogs so keep that point in mind always

Which ever way you decide to do obedience is up to you. As far as getting your pup to look at you on command, wait until feeding time. Assuming he likes to eat, or if not let him get a little hungry. Hold the bowl in your hands away from you. He will look at the bowl of food as dogs/pups do. Keep repeating "watch me", or "look at me", whatever you prefer. Hold the bowl off to the side slightly, and continue this until he glaces at you. Then give him his food. Just continue this process, he will start to figure out that looking at you gets his food. Keep repeating the command though. This may go slow in the beginning, but he will figure it out in not too long. I feed my dogs this way. They look at me as I place the food down and do not eat until I release them, keeping eye contact with me. If he is more interrested in something going on around him, move him to a place that is quiet. Personally, I like them to eat in peace anyway. Good luck.

place puppy on a leash
tie leash
sit down in front of puppy where it cannot touch you
hold two items of puppy interest in front of your face
slowly spready your hands, the puppy will follow the item that is more interesting
call the puppy by name or make sounds of interest
when the puppy looks at you say "good or ok or what every the "release command is"
give the puppy one of the toys and lots of praise
repeat over and over - letting the puppy look at you longer and longer over a week or two
have fun and good luck

I always hold a treat by the end of my nose and say "look" (make sure you are standing up straight and pup can't jump up to get treat). When pup looks, say good dog, give treat and the release command. It worked great with all my dogs. Takes time.
