just curious at what age do you guys start lettng your dogs swim in a pond or other small water hole
i would figure maybe 3 or 4 months or atleast after all puppy shots.just wondering when they really know how to swim.
i swim pretty well so i guess it doesnt matter.
just trying to have some sort of discussion.

I have one that I couldn't keep out of the water,,even at 8 wks of age.  He use to jump in his water bucket.
I had to watch him very close.    I got a little pool for the big dogs & he just jumped right in, splashing around,,,
He's one now, still loves water & will try to swim in whatever he can find.....

thanks
yeah  know they play in the water but i mean swim for excercise.i have a retention pond right behind the house and my last dog swam alot.he was 8 months when i got him so i wasnt sure when they could really swim and if you should let them build some immunity to bacteria that could be in the water.just looking for easy on the body excercise that still wears them out.

venzosmom - maybe our dogs are related, LOL!

I have no idea why my youngest is such a water dog.   Got her at 8 weeks and can't keep her out of water from day one.  She plays in the water bowl and water bucket, the toilet, puddles, the lake, any ponds.  We have a large in ground swimming pool that is located quite a distance from our home - it's a walk to get there  (don't ask why, LOL!) the damn dog goes all by herself up to the pool to go swimming - and iif I am actually AT the pool, she jumps in and swims laps until I call her out.  I have never seen anything like it.

She does have a much thicker and longer coat than the other two dogs - I wonder if a large part of it is that she's hot -- but it doesn't explain her playing in the water bucket or the toilet, LOL!
