Two German Shepherd police dogs which died in the heatwave after being left in a car by their handler had been donated to Nottinghamshire Police.

The dogs were found dead in a parked police car outside the force's headquarters on Tuesday afternoon.

It is believed the dogs' handler was not on duty at the time and had called in to the force's headquarters at Sherwood Lodge, leaving the dogs to over-heat in the parked car.

It is not known how long they were left in the car but temperatures in Nottingham on Wednesday hit 29.4 degrees Celsius.

It has since emerged the dogs were donated to carry out police work, including tracking down criminals and providing security at major events in the county.

The maximum sentence for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal is six months in prison and a £20,000 fine.

Nottinghamshire Police said the handler had not been suspended.

The Dogs Trust, the UK's largest dog welfare charity, said it was "saddened" by the news.

A spokeswoman said: "Whilst the cause of death is still to be determined, the charity would like to remind dog owners and police dog handlers that leaving your dog locked in a car can prove fatal, particularly during a heatwave. It can take just 20 minutes for a dog to die and temperatures reach over 40 degrees in some vehicles."

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said it was now investigating the incident.

What kind of idiots do they have working in that police force?  I should hope a thorough investigation is in effect and someone is found guilty of this horrendous, thoughtless act.  Those poor dogs.  Poor, poor dedicated dogs who no doubt would have given their lives to protect the asshole who let them die such a horrid death.  He should be horse whipped in public!

The tell tell signs are already there for the handler just getting a smack on the wrist and not to do it again. They have not suspended him either, so as per usual......on the score of...What will result in this?  NADA!

I live in Nottingham and regularly walk my dog Jasper in the woods next to the police headquarters.
This is too disgusting for words as the Headquarters is home to the police dog section, so there are loads of kennels available where the dogs could have put whilst there.  Their car parking is open, so no cover at all.
Unless I get out early or late evening it has been far too hot in the day time to take Jasper out in a car or for a walk.
Lets hope a prosecution is made.
Ann.

I just read that in the BBC internet news- terrible. I am British but live in Ecuador, recently someone I know here killed 3 puppies and a year old female by leaving them in the BOOT of his car. I cried, the puppies were from my male and he had just brought them to show me, and he was hoping to show the young female and had brought her to ask my opinion. On his way home he met a friend and they stopped to play volley - it was a sunny day. The dogs must have suffered a lot before dying. I gave him a good telling off and told him that in the UK this would involve a very hefty fine and possibly a prison sentence .......maybe I had too much confidence in British law??

SEVERAL YEARS AGO. IN FORT WORTH , TEXAS ,  A POLICE DOG DIED IN A CAR WHILE THE OFFICER ATE LUNCH. WINDOWS ROLLED UP AND THE CAR RUNNING , THE ENGINE DIED, AND THE ALERT ON THE OFFICERS BELT DID NOT GO OFF., TO WARN HIM.. THE CAR ACTUALLY CAUGHT ON FIRE, WHICH WAS TRAGIC.

.  SAME OFFICERS WERE ALSO GIVING CITIZENS TICKETS FOR LEAVING THEIR DOGS IN CARS WITH WINDOWS CRACKED ,  AND TELLING THEM  , YOU ARE ENDANGERING YOUR PET..YOU DO NOT HAVE A WARNING SYSTEM ON YOUR CAR OR TRUCK..

.BUT WHEN IT HAPPENED TO THE VERY ONES IN CHARGE...WHAT WAS DONE????     NADA

This was found on the Nottingham Police site (the force that this debate is about)

Appeal for working police dogs
Posted on 19th June 2008 14:55

The dog section at Nottinghamshire Police is appealing to the public to help increase the amount of working dogs at the force.

Officers require German Shepherd dogs or bitches, which are aged between one and two years of age.

The dogs will be assessed and those suitable will trained on a course in September.

If anyone feels they have a dog which would be suitable for donation and assessment for this role contact Nottinghamshire Police dog section

They also have a section stating they joined 'The Animal Welfare Scheme' (always disliked that word, Scheme, sounds to much like an 'Arthur Daley deal')
