I have posted a message before about this and thanks to all that helped me but I am still having that odor from his anal area and he is biting just a bit around his tail.  The vet suggested removing them but I am nervous because of that nerve that is right there.  Has anyone had there anal glands removed and was it successful?  He is an Amer bred 18 months

Thanks

I am going to assume your dog was checked for worms, also I am going to assume that the glands have been expressed once per month if needed, or the dog expresses them by himself. How bad is the odor.  Removal of the glands is no big deal if done by a specialist.

Dogs can get tumors in this area - often cancerous, but sometimes benign (more like a sebaceous cyst.) Has your vet checked for this? I had an older dog which required surgery to remove a large fatty tumor from one of his anal glands - it was an uncomfortable procedure to say the least,, because going to the bathroom afterwards was .......... well, painful. But it was necessary, and once the gland was gone he never again had any problem. Your fellow seems a bit young for this sort of thing, but perhaps it's worth checking out if you haven't already done so.

There shouldn't be any problem with removing one or even both glands if it is done correctly. They don't serve any particular purpose now anyway, they are a sort of primitive hold over.

I had my male's anal glands removed when he was about 2 years old after a long battle of expressing them and abscessed anal glands and he has been fine, never had a problem after that.  The only problem he had was with the stitches they bothered him a lot, so when they were taken out he was fine.
