We picked up our new puppy this week.  His second night home when it was bed time he starting to act strangely.  His mouth was wide open and he was pawing both sides of his face.  This episode lasted a good five minutes and then he went right to sleep.  We checked out his mouth and nothing was in there and my wife had her fingers as far down his throat as yo can and nothing.  This is the first GSD Puppy we ever bought as we usually buy a Schutzund 1 dog and have it imported.  Therefore when it comes to puppies we know little in development of jaws and such.  We took him to the vet the next day and was told it sounded like a seizure.  We were out of out minds with worry when we were told this.  We were told to try and get this on video if it happens again.

We bought this dog from a very very well known respected breeder.  We called and were told when puppies are just off the mother and start to eat puppy food that this happens as the jaws are developing.  Has anyone ever heard of this?  Thank you in advance for helping.

It would be good if you can get it on video tape.  Honestly I have never heard that this happens as the jaws are developing.
It was either a seizure or he had something stuck.  I would keep an eye on him and have the video camera ready.

Doesn't sound like any seizure I've seen and I've seen loads, (sister's Boxers) really does sound like he had something stuck... I hope so anyway.

Thank you Bhell,  I was afraid of this...we do have a camera ready at all times.  We lost our GSD at this years Seiger Show in Chicago, he had a seizure on the field waiting to enter the ring.  He was a year old and we found out the his brain had never totally developed.  This puppy is the replacement they sent us.

MissBeeb,

Unfortunately I too have seen many seizures and most had something in common.  Not having a puppy before I don't know what to think and the way he just fell right over and was out like a light.  I know he had nothing in his mouth as he is crated for potty training and I warch him like a hawk,

Ah!  OK, didn't realise he'd conked out.  I'm going to be optimistic and keep my fingers crossed for you and puppy.  Please keep us posted.

jAW STORY IS A BUNCH OF BOLOGNA  INDEED....YOU NEED TO GET THIS BREEDER ON NOTICE THAT YOU WANT NO MORE OF THE PUPS THEY HAVE AND WANT A REFUND..iF THE VET FINDS OUT THE PUP HAS A SEIZURE PROBLEM.....

.    UNFORTUNATELY SEIZURES ARE HARD TO CATCH  AND NO TESTINGS UNLESS THE VET SENDS YOU TO A SPECIALIST...A WHOLE LOT OF MONEY OUT OF YOUR POCKET...UNBELIEVABLE THE TALES A PERSON WILL TELL ABOUT A JAW....  I KNOW STICKS OR OBJECTS CAN GET STUCK IN THE TOOTH FROM SIDE TO SIDE,,,OR A PIECE OF KIBBLE GETS STUCK IN TOOTH BETWEEN THE CHEEK     IT DOES BOTHER THE PUP AND THEY PAW AT THE JAW ....BUT IF YOU FOUND NOTHING....I WOULD BE SUSPICIOUS....
