That just stung my heart so hard.

Such a beautiful k9, He didn't deserve to die.

My prayers go out to him and his handler, worse nightmare for anybody to shot their own dog.

I don't know If I could do it regardless if he bit me, it would be too hard!

Why didn't he at least taser him? He would of have a better chance of being alive right now!

:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

wasn't there and don't know the situation, but surely there were choices other than shoot a gun.  How about choke the dog off, pry it's mouth apart - calm down and calm the dog - ETC????  I think police officers are wayyyyyyyy too ready to draw their gun and use it nowadays, when this should be the very last possible choice they make in any situation, human or animal.

I would hope there is more to the story but based on the article and recent events I'm inclined to agree with Molly.  For me to shoot my dog/partner there would have to be a damn good reason.  I sure hope that if there is a valid reason I'd be able to do what needed to be done but biting me when hurt and under pressure would not be enough.  IMO biting me is better than biting someone who might sue....

@ ocoey

So true and I couldn't agree with you more I'd rather have him bite me and then biting someone else who will file a lawsuit in a matter of seconds.

There could of been so many other ways around it then shot the k9. I mean they could of tasered him and just like the above poster said pry it's mouth apart or get help restraining him from other officers.

He was also injured and in pain I doubt he could of made that much of damage with a few officers they could of restraint him.

I don't think I could of done what he had done, no way. I just feel bad inside, the k9 looks gorgeous!

Anybody has more information on this?

I'd would also maybe like to know where this dog came from, would be interesting.

I would not judge this incident without all of the facts, however as a Police K9 Trainer, I think it is safe to say that some poor judgement was used. It will be interesting to see if more information comes about from this. I have had my K9 injured on duty, and as a result I was bitten, however it was nothing that a few stitches didnt fix, and the dog was back to work in 6 weeks. If a handler is afraid of a bite, they should re-think being a handler.

"If a handler is afraid of a bite, they should re-think being a handler"

I couldn't of said it better, point on!

Like you said poor judgement has been definitely used.

From what I can tell the handler was probably in-experienced and most likely panicked and didn't know what to do so he just took his gun out and shot him.

I think if there is a chase going on I doubt he is the only Police officer on the chase with 3 suspects. They could of easily helped him get the dog of him and calm him down.

I also think they could of used non-lethal force to restrain the dog because the dog already was injured and wasn't 100%.

I feel bad for the dog, he didn't deserve to die. He just caught in the moment with getting hit by a car and probably all the yelling going on and the police officer yanking the suspect out the car.

It's a shame :(

Knowing more than a few K9 officers who have lost dogs, I feel for the Orlando K9 handler. I have know a couple who had to euthanize their own dogs and believe me, there was no other choice in their case. They are still dealing with the emotions even with new K9 partners. There is a reason hindsite is said to be 20/20. My Grandmother always said to remember "you did the best you could with what you knew, now that you know better, you will do better".

In no way implying that the handler didn't do his best. I wasn't there so I can't judge.
