Of real interest on this page is the ad, to the right, saying that " Staphylococcus Aureus--Browse a huge selection now--Find what you want at Ebay".
Seriously though, MRSA is a antibiotic resistant strain of Staph, created by overuse of antibiotics. So they recommend to be sure, if you or someone else is bitten or scratched by a pet, to get immediate treatment of the wound, and manage acute infection risk, including, if possible, washing out the bite wound with high-pressure saline, and treatment with antibiotics. Great idea. Use antibiotics, when we know they can cause resistant strains of bacteria upon which those antibiotics no longer work.
No wonder we're in the shape we're in. Our pets are dangerous to us, so are our homes, our cars, and our yards. Ever wonder how human kind managed to last as long as they did? I sure do.

Crys,
I do wonder that. ONE of the of the reasons I chose not to have children is the state of the world today, or when I would have considered having a baby. But now even more so. I wouldn't want to leave my children in a world that is war ridden
and plagued w/ degenerates, pedofiles, molesters, rapists, murderers, kidnappers,(to do all of the afore mentioned))
Just my opinion, and not the only reason.

I couldn't find a single fact in the article to bear out the title, all supposition at this point. I haven't heard of young kids losing limbs or life to MRSA, young athletes in their prime, yes. I remember not too long ago a poster tell us garlic was found to kill MRSA,

For those who don't think that MRSA is bad or a problem I hope neither you or your's gets it. If you don't get the spread stopped it will eat away at the tissue. My DH has one scar on the inside of his upper arm the diameter of a soda can before they got the right combination of drugs and they used a wicking treatment (gross).
So Antibiotics are absolutely essential to treat this. But from so many years of ABX being prescribed for every little thing the Staph has mutated.

Great idea. Use antibiotics, when we know they can cause resistant strains of bacteria upon which those antibiotics no longer work.If it is known MRSA infection then they don't use the usual Antibiotics, there are several antibiotics that aren't given out very often and if those don't work or like in my DH's case he was allergic to them then they give medicine that is used to treat other things like fungus or TB. Yep that is right the only drug that cleared up my DH's MRSA outbreak was a drug used to treat TB.

I think they mean use antibiotic ointments to treat cuts like neosporin. I had a freak infection like your DH (gardening of all things!) and thank goodness for Cipro says it all. It would be nice to have facts along with the headlines.

Silly you you wants fact in an article on the web, that is just unheard of. Make it sensational so people will read it and pass it along.

Another load of Codswallop they are telling us, I have been around Dogs and Horses for 60 years, had more bites on the arms etc than i have had hot dinners so to speak,
According to what they say i must be ridden with the problem.
But at 69 years old i am still as well and fit when i was half my age, Only this morning i walked 12 kms, and i was still breathing normal at the end of the walk. This evening i took young Goran for a walk of 4 kms, So perhaps if i have picked something up throughout the years it must be doing me some good

I have had a few cat bites get super-nasty infected. Nothing luckily that epsom salt soaks and amoxicillin couldn't cure.
One of my vet tech friends nearly lost a finger to a cat bite inf. Still has her finger, though it certainly doesn't look the same.
Never had a dog bite that gave me any problems. ANY wound these days bears a thorough cleaning/flushing and watching carefully.
Just FYI, if you have kids (or you) that get strep throat, you do need to treat your dogs as well, or you will just pass it back and forth.
