How do I teach my 5 Month old GSD to Bark on Commad? Also how do I get my German Shepherd to start barking to begin the training?
Thanks,

There are several ways to go about teaching your pup to bark:
For me, the easiest way has always been to use whatever initially triggers a bark, then attach a verbal cue to it. If someone knocks at your door or rings your bell does your pup bark? When he gets excited when you are playing with him will he start to vocalize? Some dogs get really excited and will start to vocalize for their dinner. You can teach him to bark on command by doing whatever triggers the barking (knock on the door, ring the bell, playing with a toy, holding his full dinner dish or a really special food bait item just out of his reach), and at the same time, give him your command, as soon as he makes even the smallest sound, big reward. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Very, very gradually, demand a stronger bark before you reward. Eventually you will be able to phase out whatever the original trigger was, because your verbal cue will have replaced it as the trigger.
Then you may want to quickly teach "quiet"!!!!!!!

I agree with Sueincc, very good advice. I also have a hand signal that I use for the "bark" as well as a hand signal for the "quiet". Funny how the "quiet" was harder to teach then the "bark"

I agree as well. When My dog barks - I say the command - I am goofy though - I will even bark at my dog - and when - he/she barks back - I follow with the command - doesnt take long - I am not patient to wait for a trigger for the bark, like a door bell- I make it myself......just a bark from me.
When My dog learns the word - then I ask for it - if I don't like the bark that comes out I don't treat - I ask again and when it get's louder - treat, treat treat..... ..

Exactly! Whether it's play, doorbell, food, doesn't matter. All that matters is figuring out what will trigger your dog to bark every time, then combine it with a command, and you are on your way!
