Is there any tick prevention such as herbal remedies or something that is better than advantix or frontline. Neither of these two products seem to be working on my GSD.  And I think that he has become more aggressive since we sarted using them about a year ago. Is that a side effect?

Both products are generally very effective when applied properly.... but they are only effective for a month for ticks, whereas you can get a little longer for fleas oftentimes

You have to apply and leave it be.... let it translocate thru the hair follicles.. don't touch, no brushing, no baths for a few days either before or after application....
If your population is very high, outdoor treatment is most likely necessary..... although we see ticks now and again here, the real season is spring and fall usually....

Hope this helps

Im not sure if you can get it where you live but one I have been using is Revolution. It does heartworm,Ticks, fleas, mange, mites and a couple kinds of worms as well.It is put on the skin as a topical. If you decide to try some natural methods and concoctions be carefull that you are given proper products and instructions.Good luck.

Nematodes is all natural and all you have to do is spray it in your yard. I purchased it 1 time in 2 1/2 years and NO ticks were found on me or my dog's since. My dog's have been free of the K9advantix, ect since then too.  Just Google nematodes and you can read up about them and/or purchase them. Depending on where you live you can find them at a garden center too.

I second the Nematodes! They work great on our own property, but we take our dogs hiking in the woods, so still need to use Advantix. I've heard of and tried various natural products such as Lemon balm and Diatomaceous Earth, but haven't had much luck with it.  Regarding Advantix: You must NOT give your dog a bath within a week before or after applying Advantix or it will will not be effective. If you do bathe your dog at anytime be sure to use a soap free shampoo that will not strip the oils from the dog's skin- this is  the info I got from Bayer, who makes Advantix.

I don't like putting chemicals on my dogs either and haven't for a long time.  They get a few ticks here and there but no more than they did when I was using Frontline or Revolution.  I think a lot of ticks have become resistant to the chemicals.
I just ordered some Bug Off Garlic - have heard great things about it on another forum, it's inexpensive and I figured it was worth a shot!

If anyone does know of anything that can be given topically that really works, I'd love to hear about it. I really hate using those chemicals too, but I hate ticks and the diseases they can cause even more. I had a dog with Lyme disease- even when treated early and aggresively with doxicycline as my boy was, symptoms can remain.
