Good looking clean cut kid, not one you'd expect for such heinous acts.
Hope they have the right boy.

IMO parents divorcing is really hard on boys especially if it happens in the teenage years.  I know when we had marital problems my son was really angry, he  started smoking pot and  his marks dropped in school.  After we got our problems sorted out, he turned around and is doing great.

I think boys act out differently than girls in these situations.  Anyways, sad situation.  You do have to be pretty messed up to do that to cats.  I find it ironic the dad's new wife loves cats.

I know what you mean.   My next door neighbor's boy -- about 8 years old -- started "acting up."   One day he started smashing a flower pot (sitting on my walk) with a baseball bat.  I went outside to see what was going on and his Mother had also just come outside.  She told me that she was going through a divorce and that he had started getting "destructive".  To make matters worse, the father would "pop in" for a few minutes, while his new girl friend was in the car waiting for him.

I don't think you can blame this guys problems on a divorce.  This guy has serious mental issues that were there for years.  Most serial killers have 2 of these 3 things in common as children:  1) wetting their bed, 2) starting fires and 3) torturing animals.  I'm willing to bet this guy had some of these other issues as well.  I hope he gets help for his mental problems, but until then I hope he is put away for a long time.  I think he may have graduated to more serious crimes if he wasn't caught.

Good looking clean cut kid, not one you'd expect for such heinous acts.

So was Ted Bundy!  Don't let looks deceive you; you can't always judge a book by it's cover.

I agree,  Ted Bundy was very good looking.  Still alot has to do with parenting IMO.

Jeffrey Dahmer also tortured / killed animals.

I agree with Jim:   The behavior is a clear indication of serious mental problems and may, perhaps, be part of the "trio" of indicators common to serial killers.  In effect, he is already a serial killer.   Hopefully, we won't have to look back at these incidences as "practice" for a main event.

This boy's conduct goes far beyond mere "acting out."   He has very serious mental problems and his parents had better get him some serious professional help, regardless of how these criminal charges come out.

Jim,  I'd be willing to be that he has already exhibited all three indicators.

You can't predict 100% that someone is going to be a serial killer but torturing animals (not simply killing) is usually a good sign. I notice there is a lot of diagnosing on the message board, and sometimes it seems that people just refer to someone as being disturbed because they don't like them.

You're right about one thing. The kid needs serious help. If he is a sociopath, regular therapy actually makes them better at what they do. They need to get help from a doctor who has the experience. These people are not stupid. They are as heartless and manipulative as they are sadistic. A lot of these guys not only never get treatment, they go on living life and making other people miserable unless they are caught and convicted of something serious. Then they usually end up in jail and not treatment - and then they are let go again!

If this kid's parents make excuses about his behavior - my parents got divorced by I never totrtured animals and thought it was an acceptable way to work through my crap - then they are just as responsible as he is for what he does.

The three signs Jim mentioned are the classic signs criminologists and federal profilers found when they studied the lives of known serial killers. The intent of the studies was to red flag individuals who were caught starting fires or torturing animals so that intervention could be made before these psychopaths "graduated" to torturing and killing people. And make no mistake, they are psychopaths. Those who torture animals are sadists who get pleasure from creating and watching pain in another living creature. They are somehow, perhaps genetically, perhaps environmentally, without the compassion and empathy that most of us normal people have.  When one is found, the justice system should lock the door and throw away the key.

These boys and men usually have broken or dysfunctional families with a missing or abusive father. Contrary to what the feminists would have us believe, both a mother and a father in a normal relationship are necessary to produce well adjusted young men.

In a manner of speaking this young man has already graduated to torturing human victims by returning the mutilated corpses to their owners, even 'staging' the bodies for maximum psychological torment.

Then, from one report I read, he injected himself into the investigation, which gave him direct access to view the grief and torment these people were feeling at the torture and murder of their pets.

I for one would like to be ensured that this twisted young man never sees the light of day again.
