I just drove 8 hours to pick up this dog. I am just sick. The particulars; Came from a breeder named Beartooth Canine, (Lornel Wiseman) originally, sold to a lady in MT. This lady has had this dog for 6 1/2 yrs. Now suddenly her excuse, on my surrender form says:"unable to take care of him the way he deserves..."
AFTER 6 1/2 YRS????
He is a matted mess. I don't know when he was groomed or brushed or bathed last...He has a hotspot on his left hip the size of 2 grapefruits. I haven't been able to get through the rest of the coat yet, to see if there are more. I think I will just have to shave him to save him the hurt of brushing.
I had a friend of mine, near where he lived, get ahold of the breeder to see if she would take him back and place him...her answer...??? "Well, we are going on vacation for a month so call the rescue..."
To his credit, he is good with cats, kids and other dogs. The former owner said he "has a loving disposition, licks alot."
Kept outside, in a fenced yard and tied!!! Not allowed inside at night. Favorite game is fetch...very athletic, can jump the fence. Does not act his 6 1/2 yrs. Great teeth.
I have only been around this dog for a few hours now...He is the sweetest thing...great temperment...and loving...after all he has been through....
NOW DO YOU SEE WHY I DO THIS??? CAN YOU SEE THIS DOG IN A SHELTER? His name is Chewy...He is a total teddy bear,...I hope, I find a loving home to give him the rest of his days... Thanks, for letting me vent...

He is absolutely gorgeous even with his matted fur. I don't understand how someone can let this happen to one of their own dogs. Is he underweight because he does not appear thin. I think that God has a special place for all of those out there that take the time to take in animals that have not been cared for. 
I hope that Chewy finds the best home ever after what I know will be alot of pampering and interaction.

Nothing this poor boy had gone through is fair, but be thankful you got him and will be able to rehome him. Some people just drop their unwanted dog off on the side of the street or in a shelter that may just put him down because of his breed or can't place him. As a former professional Groomer, I would shave him. Esp. if the mats are tight and to the skin. His hair will grow back and like you said, it will be less painful for him. If he is put through a tramatic grooming experience he may not agree to grooming again in the future.

I used to groom for a living maaaaany years ago...lol...guess I have my work cut out for me, LOL...After a nice walk we layed down in the shade and started brushing... Here is the batch that came out...so far, he was soooo good, when I brushed under his neck, where the collar was, he lifted his head and groaned....what a sweety...
He is not skinny, but his diet was the wonderful Ol Roy dog food, they were nice enough to send about 5 lbs with...:-)
