I'm looking for feedback from people who actually own or have owned a trained PPD. Did you train the dog yourself or buy the dog already trained? Were there any unexpected problems or issues? Did you ever need to use the PPD in a real life situation? If so, what happened? I've seen the staged videos and wasn't real impressed. But I do understand nobody is going to volunteer to be attacked for real just to demonstrate what the trained PPD is capable of. Also, how much did the dog cost and was it worth the money? Again, I'd really appreciate feedback from people who have had experience with a trained PPD. Thanks!

Triodegirl you would like a ppd  .You should go for it with Bella . Get out their with a trainer and train her  yourself .  you and Bella can do it . The down side is you always have to keep your dog 100 percent under your control after the training . No sleeping on the job .LOL

Triodgirl,
I have what you could consider a PPD here in rescue. He is a retired Police Canine, Certified Apprehension and Drug dog. He is 8 yrs old, the last handler couldn't keep him because he like to bite his handler when corrrected for something he didn't do...I don't blame him, I would too...LOL,...anyhow, he was slated to be put down,  but I found out and took him in.

HE IS THE BEST DOG I HAVE EVER OWNED...He will do anything I ask him to, I can do anything to him, the former handlers are amazed. I can take balls out of his mouth that they couldn't , the others had to "exchange" a ball...

He has shown that he will protect me from anything he feels a threat...a friend who used to train police dogs came over and he wouldn't let him near me, stood leaning up against him and looked at him, warned him not to move. I had to take him by his collar and put him in the crate...he likes most all people, but he doesn't want them in my space. I am starting to work with him on that, to correct it and only be aware if I say so....but  I have only had him a short time, we are still getting to know one another.

BUT!!!! Wazzup is correct...when anyone strange comes over, I have to be present, and if need be, put him in his crate...he is a working dog and all he has known his whole life is work. He loves to play, I take him camping and hiking and fishing with me. You  have to be reading them 100 percent of the time. Let no one play around wrestling with you or ever get in a verbal fight with others...my dog reads me very well and I have only had him about 3 weeks now.
You won't be able to trust just anyone ot care for the dog when you have to go out of town...etc...
I know there are exceptions to the rule, but you always have to be careful...Most dogs will protect you on their own if they feel they are threatened...I also rescued a Malinois, just 2 yrs old now that is very protective of me, I have been working with him myself and he is coming along great...

So go ahead and work with your girl...you won't be sorry, but just be careful of all the rest of your life you own her...remember there is liability issues should anything happen also...not trying to scare you off...just be careful...
Take care, Stephanie

Hey Wuzzup, wuzzup? LOL  I plan to have Bella evaluated, then decide on training. I know about the liability issues. Hopefully a trained dog would be easier to control?  But then there are no guarantees with dogs, so would always be careful anyway.

Stephanie, it's really a shame that any retired police K9 would end up in rescue. Good for you for giving him another chance. I've read some of your other posts and you deserve a lot of credit for your work with other rescues as well. Best of luck!  The world needs a lot more people like you.

Very good artwork Stephanie, Astra was a ppd, and yes I agree with wuzzup, she knew what to do but we had to learn to be a team, so working with a trainer was a must. She was a great dog, and turned out to be a very good shutzhund athlete too.
She could read me and I could read her, as I said we were a team. I really miss the closeness.
Always,
Cee

It is actually a photo I took that I turned into a watercolor....LOL...I don't have time to paint anymore...now I have to play with it on the computer...
I guess I didn't explain very well...my mind sometimes thinks faster than I type...
Thanks, Steph
