Hello. What is your experience with the reliabliity of ultrasounds around the 30 day mark? A vet had found 3 to 4 "for sure" but I of course am hoping for more. The vet is not a repro specialist but does perform the ultrasounds on breeding clients. I understand it is unusual to overestimate and more common to underestimate.
What is your experience?

ultra sound is more to detect pregancy.
xray gives a better idea of how many ,which you can get after 42 days.
but xray may still hide some pups if there quite a few.
good luck

The vet that I used for the ultra sound counted 8 pups and he is by far NO specialist. On x-ray he also counted 8 pups. 1 week and 1 day ago Anka gave birth to 8 pups. He was the 1st vet that I've had since I've been doing this that got the actual count right in both the ultra sound and x-ray's. The other vets I've had were any where from 2-4 pups off, but not this vet. I do agree that an ultra sound is only used to determine that the female is prego, and the x-ray can give you more of a head count, but even with that you always want to add 1-2 pups from what the vet counted on the x-ray. I didn't have to do that with my vet though.

Obvisiously the more experience your vet has the better he or she should be. There is always room for human error and any good vet will tell you it is only an estimate & that the count can be off plus or minus 2. Even x-rays aren't exact and sometimes can even be "whited out" or puppies can be side-by-side or on top of each other. My vets do 3 x-rays from varying angles to have an overlap view & help eliminate this.
I just had a litter on Mother's Day and was expecting possibly 10 or more via ultrasound at 35 days. I have 9 puppies & didn't lose one. However, I did not do an x-ray until my female had to have an ER C-Section because her contractions weren't strong enough & she'd been in labor over 24hrs without a puppy being born. Saw 9 on x-ray & I got 9.

Thanks for the replies. But it seems that mistakes are likely on larger litters....I wonder though if onyl 3 or 4 are seen on the ultrasound if pups could truly be "hiding"?? :(

Yes, on the three or four..with some hiding..Mahon took Dressa for an ultra sound and she said three :
well she had 6 or 7 not three.
There is not sure count as they can be hidden up under the ribcage area and behind the ones seen...I never ever use either..when they come , they come and we count them then. I don't have the extra money for all the fancy things of birthing. All the othe tests and pre whelp and post whelp are enough to choke the horse at the bank so I just wait and be surprised.

Last time we took a bitch for an ultrasound, the vet said "at least 3". We ended up with 10 pups after exactly 24hrs in labour!
