Greetings everyone,

On behalf of the All Ireland German Shepherd Dog Association, I would like to give a big “congratulations!!” to everyone who was awarded high placings, class wins and green stars at our Show on Sunday. We were very pleased with the entry for our show and we were delighted to see so many exhibitors/ spectators around the side of the ring. Most exhibitors took the decisions made by the Show Committee as well as the Judge in a very sporting manor, which was appreciated by all, and the atmosphere was fantastic (so a big “thank you!!” to everyone for helping to make the show an enjoyable one). The show, of course, was helped by the beautiful weather we had on the day… I’m guessing a lot of people who were there are as pink as we all are!

Congratulations to the above winners of all special awards! You all deserved the wins and I hope everyone can agree that our Judge this year was very fair, honest and accurate in his decisions on the day.

After speaking with S.V. Judge, Herr. Uwe Sprenger, he stated that, in his opinion, the quality of dogs/ bitches in Ireland was excellent, but that exhibitors should watch the size of the males. Aside from this small critique he said that he did not note any major flaws with our dogs/ bitches and it was a pleasure to have judged this year. (In case Herr. Sprenger ever makes it onto the Pedigree Database, I’d like to say that it was a delight to have had him as our judge and I enjoyed our time spent with him a great deal).

Perhaps I’ll sound a wee bit biased, but I would like to personally thank Stavros for his vision… although there were a few “Trojan” helpers on the day, we couldn’t have done it without Stavros’s determination and drive.

On a side note, our next show (an Open Show) will take place on 03 October, 2009 (Mr. John Cullen has graciously accepted our invitation to judge this event and we hope that you will give him your support through entries and exhibits!) and, following that, we will have another Open Show in mid-late February, 2010 with our next Champ Show being at the end of May, 2010.

It appears by your results above that the SV Judge awarded the grade of "EXCELLENT" to GSD under the age of TWO YEARS. Can you please inform me it that is what the Herr Uwe Sprenger did?
David Payne

by Stavros on 25 May 2009 - 22:05

Hello Mr. Payne,

Our judge, Herr. Uwe Sprenger, judged under I.K.C. and F.C.I. Rules and, as such, is entitled to award dogs from Junior class forward the grade of Excellent. At Green Star Shows, of which ours was one, it is Puppies who receive the grading of Promising or Very Promising, with Junior dogs (age 12 months) and above receiving the award of either Excellent, Very Good, Good, Sufficient or Cannot be Judged.

Regards,

Rebecca Stapleton

Thank you for your prompt reply:
I have now found the FCI rules here: http://www.fci.be/reglements.aspx
They make interesting reading
6 QUALIFICATIONS AND PLACINGS
The qualifications given by the judges must correspond to the following definitions:
EXCELLENT may only be awarded to a dog which comes very close to the ideal standard of the breed, which is presented in excellent condition, displays a harmonious, well-balanced temperament, is of high class and has excellent posture. Its superior characteristics in respect of its breed permit that minor imperfections can be ignored; it must however have the typical features of its sex.
VERY GOOD may only be awarded to a dog which possesses the typical features of its breed, which has well-balanced proportions and is in correct condition. A few minor faults may be tolerated but none of a morphological nature. This award can only be granted to a dog that shows class.
GOOD is to be awarded to a dog that possesses the main features of its breed however showing faults provided these are not concealed.
SUFFICIENT must be awarded to a dog which corresponds adequately to its breed, without possessing the generally accepted characteristics or whose physical condition leaves something to be desired.
DISQUALIFIED must be awarded to a dog which does not correspond to the type required by the breed standard; which shows a behaviour clearly not in line with its standard or which behaves aggressively; which has testicular abnormalities; which has dental flaw or a jaw anomaly; which shows a colour and/or coat imperfection or clearly shows signs of albinism. This qualification shall also be awarded to dogs that correspond so little to a single feature of the breed that their health is threatened. It should furthermore be awarded to dogs that show eliminating faults in regard to the breed standard.
Dogs that cannot be awarded one of the above qualifications shall be released from the ring with the rating :
CANNOT BE JUDGED. This rating is to be given to any dog which does not move, constantly jumps up and down on its handler or tries to get out of the ring, makes it impossible to assess the gait and the movement or avoids constantly to be examined by the judge and makes it impossible to inspect teeth, anatomy and structure, tail or testicles. This rating is also to be given if traces of operations or treatment can be observed which seem to indicate that the exhibitor wanted to deceive the judge.
The same applies if the judge has ample reason to suspect operations that were intended to correct the original condition or feature (e.g.: eyelid, ear or tail). The reason why the dog was rated CANNOT BE JUDGED has to be stated in the judge’s report.
The four best dogs in each class are placed provided that they have been awarded at least the qualification “VERY GOOD”.

I also found the IKC rules here, again interesting reading:
http://ikc.ie/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=45&Itemid=62
Green Star System
The number of Green Stars required for Championship title is 7, to be gained under 7 different judges. The dog must be graded excellent, or in the case of a Puppy Very Promising,to challenge for the Green Star. Grading Cards will be issued by the Irish Kennel Club. Champions are eligible to challenge for the Green Star. One Green Star must be won after the dog reaches the age of 15 months. There will be no enhancement for Group wins.
Points under the old system would be converted as follows;
Dogs having won;
1.5 points, count as 1 Green Star
6- 11 points, count as 2 Green Stars
12- 18 points, count as 3 Green Stars
19 – 24 points, count as 4 Green Stars
25 – 31 points, count as 5 Green Stars
32 – 38 points, count as 6 Green Stars
Dogs having won 38 points or more under the old Green Star System must win 1 Green Star under the new system to be awarded the title of Champion.
The title of Annual Champion in each breed is awarded to the dog with the highest number of Green Stars won in the calendar year. In the event of a tie the award is made to the dog with the greater number of Best Of Breed wins.
It is proposed to implement this system from January 2007 with a review in 2009.

Well done to the commitee and all involved in what was an excellent show. A lot of effort and organisation was put in to bring such a standard and it was evident from start to finish.

Hi

Its hard to believe that an SV Judge would award the grading of excellent to a dog that has not reach its full maturity. It make a mockery of what the sv stand for if their judges make such ridiculous judgements when there are visiting other countries. How are we ever going to bring the german shepherd dog clubs together for the better of the breed.Awarding excellent  grades to dogs with no requirements for health and no gun test is why the breed today is in such a sorry state.I think the sv judges should only judge dogs to sv /wusv rules when visting other countries where they are wusv member clubs.By doing so we will bring uniformity to judgeing and selection of our breed for the future worldwide.

Julie

by Stavros on 26 May 2009 - 09:05

Julie,

First can I say that we held a very high standard show considering the restrictions that were placed upon us. First, we were not granted permission by the I.K.C. to perform a Character Assessement (i.e. Gun Test) on any of the dogs (this was, in part, due to complaints received by the I.K.C.; apparently there were those concerned with us doing Character Assessments... I can only speculate as to the reason for this). Secondly, we did not write the rules for the F.C.I. which, along with the I.K.C., governs the regulations of our shows. Thirdly, I think the vast majority of exhibitors and spectators at our show agreed that the show was very well organised, managed and that our Judge was very fair and honest in his decisions on the day. Although we agree with many of the requirements of the WUSV we are unfortunately not governed by them nor affiliated to them and thus we must operate under the rules of the I.K.C. and the F.C.I., which we did. All dogs from Junior forward were measured correctly and oversized dogs were penalised for this; also, the Judge did personally examine each dog that entered the ring from teeth to testicals where applicable; suffice to say, the Judge (who has many years experience) was very pleased overall with both the quality and condition of the dogs he judged. A dog who has not yet reached maturity can be "excellent" in quality, condition and movement on the day of the show and if the judge deems it appropriate we have no issues with him awarding any of the dogs an excellent grading. Are you trying to insinuate in any way that the dogs in our show were unhealthy or unsound and the our Judge gave complete disregard to these issues? Can I ask, Julie, are you from Ireland and are you familiar with the dog scene in Ireland? If so, are you a member of a particular club here? If you are, you will understand the politics involved in this country... which, I believe, are also evident in other countries as well. The mockery is not ours; the mockery is in large part due to the system which we must adhere to and to suggest otherwise is insulting to the hard work of the members of our club and the exhibitors who supported us.
