Good eveing every one,

Would some one please explain the numbers used in linebreeding, such as (5-4  Va1 Ulk von Arlett).
what does (5-4) refer to, importance !, which is better bigger or smaller numbers or no linebreeding at all?

Greetings
Ibrahim

its basically saying that VA1 Ulk shows up in the 5th generation on the sire side,  and in the 4th gen. on the dams side.

This is my dream team

The first number is the dog in common from the Sire's side,  the second number or set of numbers is that same dog in the Dam's side.

So with Fero below on the first line.   he is 4 generations back on my male,  and ALSO on my Bessy's side 5th generation AND  fourth generation back.

As far as numbers go...........3 is as low as I would go if it is a superior dog like Troll second to the end.   A 1-1 would mean you are breeding brother and sister.

This exercise might help explain it a bit more in detail.  Its a purely a mathematical calculation.  How the Meiosis process actually divides the chromosomes up in to the haploid cell for fertilization to the ovum or via the spemazoa, well that is pure "alignment of the stars".
In short, Line breeding concentrates the chromosomes on a specific dog in the pedigree. The closer to the first generation, the higher the probability of that concentration.
The percentages of these probabilities are called: "Inbreeding Coefficients" or "IC" as seen below:

This is an example of a "technical" inbreeding, which is simply a "closer line-breeding"
An "inbreeding" is a 2-2 or less linebreeding. Technically, a linebreding is a 2-3 or 3-2 breeding. Any breeding beyond 5 generations is referred o as an "outcross" with less than 1.3 percent of any dog in the pedigree contributing to the offspring's chromosomes.

How often is a 2-2 performed, and what are, if any, are the risks of doing this?   I'm referring to a mating a male and female having the same dam as the mother, but differenent sires as the father.

2,2 are rare in the german system,  they need to be ok'd  before doing the breeding.

you see alot more 2,2... or 1/2 brother /sister breedings with the american show people (not just gsd,  but most breeds)

just remember, you do a close linebreeding  ( such as 2-2), you not only double up on the good, you also double up on the bad.  dont get me wrong, im not against such a breeding, but you want to make sure you know of any and all health problems you may be compounding on before you do such a thing.  and not just with the parents, but the grandparents and great-grandparents as well.
