Thanks,
Dre
We were playing tug of war and were practicing off, take it, and drop with the the rope. When I briefly took it away he started barking and showing his teeth at me and then nipped my hand as in bit my hand enough to create a scratch but not draw blood whenever it was near the rope and his face.

Are you working with an experienced trainer and are you sure your dog threw a temper tantrum (not meant to dismiss your knowledge or slam you in any way)? If you are sure it was a tantrum, then what came before the tantrum? Was your pup exposed to kids who played with him, did he have a busy stimulus filled day? Did you something away from him or disciplined him?
The reason I ask this is because of my experiences with my very first GSD working dog. I had a wonderful trainer friend who taught me the difference between temper tantrum, frustration with what I was asking dog to do (usually I was at fault for not being clear or asking him to make too big a step in training), or just plain done in, tired. Temper tantrums should not be tolerated in dogs any more than in children. But like children who can be overwhelmed with what is going on around them, so can a young pup. We all know how kids who have been overstimulated get, we all know a snotty kid or three as well.
Good luck

I would like to know more about the particulars of this behavior.
What was going on at the time? What were you doing?
Details please.
What do you mean by a nip?
Did the dog bring it to you, or were you already in striking distance?
Dogs do not have temper tantrums, and you need to do something about it now.
You may be in over your head.
Details.
Moons.

I kicked him hard in the ass and took the bowl away. He stopped growling.
