How many can answer the question of ( the live long and prosper hand sign)? Question ! Where does this hand gesture have it,s origins??? And for what purpose was and is it used ? Many will be shocked and amazed to discover the truth about it !! Do you know? Answer coming soon

I'm ashamed to say... I do NOT know this.

I can say that I've heard Leonard Nimoy couldn't do it, and he would have to arrange his fingers with his other hand, and then bring his hand up already making the sign.  He couldn't hold up his hand with his fingers together, and then "split" them to make the sign.

Actually it is a Jewish, or a close resemblance from Nimoy's boyhood Jewish experience in the Synagogue , of a hand sign once used by the Yimish.....It was with two hands, but the way he originated it was with one hand. It was a Vulcan greeting based on a blessing gesture  used by the priest who led the services..

The greeting used two hands to form the Hebrew letter   called    SHIN  .  Stands for the Hebrew word   "Shaddai"    meaning     Almighty  God... Nimroy modified it to the one hand held up making it like a salute.   Actually the Vulcan greeting is not the same as the Jewish blessing but resembles it enough to be recognized by most all knowledgeable Jews.

We sing a song in our camps and on our contemporary choirs here in America  called   El Shaddai, El Shaddai""    a beautiful gospel song...

In Star WARS , it is used as a greeting or  a parting...go in peace and good will   or   long live and good will.....

Of course you mean Star TREK...

:)

Luke Skywalker never said "Live long, and prosper!".

Yellow rose is so smart  :isn't she people? Here is a clue and some backround . That hand sign originates from the priests of the Hebrew temples in israel holding both hands up in that gesture and saying "it is finished" after the sacrifices were concluded  and admonishing the people to go in peace and the blessing of Jehovah God. It also spells the four consonate letters of the hebrew name of God. Now when Jesus was crucified and the romans put the inscription above his head it did this. The first letter of each word in the inscrription dropped down and combined read as the four ancient letters of the  Hebrew word for God and with Jesus stretched forth with his hands tied and nailed giving the priests sign of it is finished said it is finished and died. Strange hao God declares his word even in the world of hollywood and television and people are still bling to him! That is as close to truth as I can remember it correctly.

Leonard Nimoy was discussing it in an interview just recently, was saying that he suggested using this sign in the original series, & that Gene Roddenberry was the person who OK'd it's usage, & was very enthusiastic about having a symbol of spirituality & positivity used throughout the series...according to Nimoy. Nimoy also suggested that the sign, & the consistant high moral tone of the original series were what set it apart & bolstered it above the sit-coms of the time. I'd have to agree. Star Trek set a standard of behaviour for a great many youth never exposed to church or other moral compasses. Despite all Captain Kirk's lasivious behaivour, the 'right' choices always saved the day! jh

Very cool.  I watched that show pretty much every day after school growing up, and couldn't tell you a thing about it.  I am not a very good star trek fan at all, but after hearing the rave reviews about the movie, I will make sure I see it!

I think I will go see it also.. I forgot most of it but a nice movie would be delightful.

Definitely a Trekkie, I had a dog called Tuvok (Nyrvana Goes Star Trekking) , black of course with nicely pointed ears.  I currently own Kira and her daughter Nerys (Deep Space Nine).
