I'm moving to a bigger house w/a bigger yard.  Any suggestions for a smooth tranistion?

First, make sure everyone stays calm before, during, and after the move. If you guys are calm, your dog should be. Dogd feed off owners' emotions so you set the stage. Put something of your's and something of your dog's in the house so the smell is there as your dog walks in. If your dog is naturally nervous in new situations, I might try melatonin, the vegetarian brand only. 3 mg for a dog 35-100lbs about an hour before leaving (given every 8 hours). Just make sure you all are calm, moving is a stressful experience for all and exciting too. I am not sure if you have small children or not. If so, I would make sure they and the dog don't arrive at the same time, it's hard for kids not to be emotional. You want a calm environment for the first time. Good luck and it usually goes well, at least it has with all my dogs and moving.

If the move is local, take the dog to the new neighbourhood for the occassional walk before the big day. He/she will adjust better if already semi-familiar with the new area.

That's a great question JRansom,

I would have never thought that this would be an issue, but I have a breeder friend that recently moved and one of her girls really took the move hard. She became very, very depressed and stopped eating. If I would not have seen this girl prior I would have thought she was not caring for her,  this was a gorgeous female.  I am convinced that she stopped eating because of she was so depressed. This was an experience I will never forget.
