A Google search finds that most service dog programs have moved away from the German Shepherd because of;
- Public perception (fear) of the breed
- Their tendency to bond closely with their original trainer, and difficulties transitioning to a new owner
- Health and temperament issues with the American bloodlines, HD, ED

I actually meant as service dogs for returned veterans that have been injured in combat.

Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation.. uses only shepherds ( European, not american).. but it is only for the visually impaired.. Located in Bloomfield, Conn. www.Fidelco.org
