A Google search finds that most service dog programs have moved away from the German Shepherd because of;
  1. Public perception (fear) of the breed
  2. Their tendency to bond closely with their original trainer, and difficulties transitioning to a new owner
  3. Health and temperament issues with the American bloodlines, HD, ED
This thread is not to contend these points, just to find what programs using German Shepherds can be assisted financially.

I actually meant as service dogs for returned veterans that have been injured in combat.

Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation.. uses only shepherds ( European, not american)..  but it is only for the visually impaired..  Located in Bloomfield, Conn.   www.Fidelco.org
