GSD20007

by GSD20007 on 16 May 2009 - 17:05

My beautiful female is 17mths and is just finishing her 3rd season.

She was born December 07.
1st season was Sept 08.  (aged 9mths)
2nd season was Jan 09.
3rd season was May 09.

I'm curious how common it is for GSD females to experience such frequent cycles and are there any negative health implications?

Subject to usual breed health checks, I'd like to leave my options open to breed from her in the future, but worry she may be more at risk from pyometra because of the frequency of her seasons?

Can anyone offer any info/experience/advice please?
Thanks.

I posted about something similar a few days ago. One of my females had her first heat at 8 months and thereafter every 3.5 - 4 months, but the last few have been even shorter - just 3 months (and once only 2). She is 5 years old and had 3 litters with no problems, but the last couple of times I bred her since she has had 3 month cycles she did not get pregnant. She has had no other health problems. Would be interested in any more comments.

My bitch did that too, and so do her daughters. Breed now, title later! Their uteruses are shot when they're about 5 years old. But it's not all that uncommon in GSDs.

OK, so no chance of any more litters for my 5 year old then?
