I have a female, now aged 5, who had her first heat at 8 months and has always had a short cycle- until recently it was always 3.5 to 4 months between heats. I have not bred her every tiime but she has had 3 litters with different males and produced good puppies. Her last litter was born in June 2007. But her last few cycles have been even shorter - 3 months, 2 months, 3 months and now again 3 months. Of these cycles the first I tried to breed her but the heat seemed to pass very quickly, she only bred once and did not get pregnant. When she came into heat just 2 months later I thought it may have been a split heat and bred her again - this time she showed all signs of being pregnant until about 6 weeks when she suddenly went thinner again. The next heat came after 3 months and I did not breed her. Now she is in heat again - 3 months again. I am wondering if there is any possibility of her getting pregnant with such short cycles and if the cytological tests would be a reliable indication of ovulation (progesterone testing not available). I had been thinking of trying with a male in my town but there is only one here with kkl who is not her son and although he has had some nice puppies he is not really my choice for her. But I am reluctant to send her away again if the chances of her getting pregnant are very small. My vet seems to think 3 months between cycles is OK but I have read elsewhere that the uterus does not have chance to prepare for pregnancy, also some other factor such as ovarian cysts could be responsible for the short cycle and not getting pregnant. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions? The other thing is that she always used to blow her coat in a big way a few days before coming into heat but this time this has not happened, I was hoping she would make it to at least 3.5 months this time...

See a vet specializing in reproduction issues.    I would suggest Dr. Hutchinson in Cleveland, if you are anywhere in the Midwest or MidEast region.

Thank you, but I live in Ecuador so its not possible. Just wondered if anyone had had any similar experiences?

 Sorry.

Okay, let me tell you that I am in a similar situation:  my 15 month old bitch apparently has 3  month cycles.  I contacted Dr. Hutchinson, so told me that  (1) This is a problem becoming more common in gsds, and (2) that it is bad for the bitch's uterus to have such short cycles.  He said that he is seeing 3 year old gsd bitchs with the uterus of an eight or nine year old non-gsd bitch, because of the short cycles.  The uterus does not have a change to recover.

Interesting. Did he say what may be causing this and is there any treatment? When did yours have her first heat - is it related to starting early?

I don't believe that it is because of her having her first heat at an early age as I also have a bitch that cycles every 4 months and she had her first heat at 16 months but I she is now 5 years old and so far has only had 1 litter and 1 false pregnancy, fingers crossed she was mated 3 weeks ago so I hope that she is pregnant this time.
