Does quartering (weaving back and forth across the track) while tracking mean anything, other than the dog is having trouble finding the scent? Does it indicate a lack of experience or confidence?
I don't recall my previous tracking dog doing this as much as my current two.
Fun note: blackfly season is starting here, and I managed to inhale two of them while tracking this evening. They taste rather sweet...

Quartering is the natural way the dog moves on the track to hit the fringes and move in and out of the strongest scent. I don't thinkis has a darned t hing to do with the dog loosing the scent other than the dog is probably working the human element of the scent as opposed to the crushed vegetation.
I imagine moving in and out of scent relates to the dog clearing the nose when there is heavy scent to allow them to continue to age the track.
Schutzhund forces the deep nose and staying right on top of the track. AKC allows quartering as does trailing to find people.

Where abouts do you live Sunsilver?

by Sunsilver on 13 May 2009 - 14:05
Northern Ontario, 3 hours north of Toronto. It's what they call the "Near North" as opposed to the 'Far North" up near Hudson's Bay.

My brother runs a bear sanctuary near Huntsville, close to you?
I'm about 2.5 hrs west of TO.

Red Sable, it sounds like you're close to my brother, who lives in Waterloo!
I go in to Huntsville to shop about once a week! It's about a 50 minute drive. Nice town, though quite touristy.
The town I live in is so small, even though I just moved here in September, the postal clerk didn't need to ask my name or look at the delivery notification before she went to retrieve a parcel they were holding for me! (We pick up our mail from self-serve post boxes in the post office, so it's not like she sees my face every day.)
Do you know of anyone up here that's into schutzhund?

Too funny, I'm about 45 minutes from Waterloo. The town where I live is the same, everyone knows me by name, it's nice.
No, sorry, I'm not sure where a schutzhund club is near you or that there even is one.

The nearest club is back where I moved from, close to Aurora (Toronto Schutzhund).
I was just wondering if there was someone you knew up this way who just worked with their own dogs, and didn't belong to a club. It would be nice if I could find someone like that to work with.

No. My brother and his wife are the only folks I know that way, and they are into cars and bears.
I come from a family of eight kids, but I'm the only one into dogs, besides my dad, and his love is Great Danes. I'd love to find someone near me to work with too, we seem to be scattered around here.
