Two Moons

by Two Moons on 12 May 2009 - 17:05

Last weekend I saw what I thought was a road side stand across from Walmart. they usually use the spot to sell tomatoes or watermelons, but the sign said Lab/Wolf pups $75.00.   Pups in a box in the back of a van.
I almost came unglued.   After thinking it through I decided not to say anything and drove off with a very sad feeling.
There's really nothing too say, just wishing people were different.

Wouldn't that be illegal in some parts of the States?

I'm pretty sure it's illegal here in Ontario! (Selling wolf mixes.)

Edit: "Breeding wolves or wolf-dog hybrids for pets in Ontario is prohibited but unregulated."

I assume that means the government really doesn't give a hoot about enforcing the law.

Sadly, my search also produced many links to wolf dog hybrids for sale.

I don't know if it's illegal to have wolf mixes where Moons lives, but it isn't here, in Idaho.  Just the same, up until our local shelter here became a no-kill shelter a few years back, it didn't do to mention that a dog looked like a wolf cross, or to mention that one was a wolf cross when it's owners dropped it off.  Wolf blood was an instand death warrant.  No ifs, no ands, no buts.

I worked there one summer, and a lady came in with a litter of pups.  She had the dam, which was a wolf hybrid, and had shut her into a horse trailer while she was in heat.  A male dog had gotten in somehow and bred her, and the lady wanted to drop the puppies at the shelter, even though they were only a few days old.  She was told they'd be euthanized, and she didn't care, brought them in anyway.

It made me sad, so sad, to see that.  I know they're unpredictable, I've had experience with them, but for God's sake, at least she should have had the guts to deal with the pups herself.  The only crime those pups were guilty of was having undesireable breeding.

A hybrid wolf is one thing,  but who would let a lab breed with a wolf?
And then peddle them at a road side stand.
No matter what I could have done or said it wouldn't have changed anything.
Anger overpowered my curiousity and I couldn't even look at them.

Their "wolf" was probably a GSD and they hoped they could get a little more $$$$ out of them if they said that.   There used to be a LOT of puppy millers/BYBs that set up in front of Walmart/K-mart in my hometown, but luckily they have been run off after complaints from people. There are still "free puppies" on occasion but no sales allowed.

It is very sad, not to long ago someone tryed to sell 6 GSD pups for $5.00 a pup they was about 5-6 wks old  they looked purebreed but you never know I ask why he is selling them so cheap the answer was because they are females we don't like females , when I ask him if the parents are Reg. he said yes but they did not wanted to spend money for reg. on Females,  so I purchased them all got them healthy and Spayed and placed them in good homes. I could not belive that people can be this cruel and heartless.
