Hello,

I have a 10 week old working line GSD that is house broken and crate trained.  I have been trying to leave it outside in her kennel run, but she doesn't stop barking at all.  I don't leave her long, 3 hours at the most but she is no stop till I return.  I don't let her out till she settles down.

My question is she too young to be left outside alone?  Should I just let her be, and eventually she will get used to it?  Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Give her a gigantic juicey, yummy delicious

BEEF MARROW BONE

You will not hear a peep out of her, also great for teething pups, keep it frozen until you give it to her!

Tire her out before you plop her in, give her a toy/bone to keep busy and invest in a pair of earplugs.

You have to ignore the barking.
But 10 weeks is a bit young.
3 hours won't hurt anything.
Just make sure there is shelter from the sun, lots of water, and a toy or a bone.
And keep watch.... 10 weeks is young.
The crate would be better.

She's already crate trained and house trained..........Why do you feel you need to put her in an outdoor run?

by CatawbaGSD on 12 May 2009 - 02:05

Why should she not put her in a run? Just because she is crate trained does not mean that she shouldn't have fun and be able to play outside. Maybe she wants her out of the house. My dogs are outside from 8 am to 10 pm and they would go crazy in the house....

This is a ten week old puppy.
Thats the only thing to remember.

Thanks for the replies.  CatawbaGSD is correct, I would want her to be able to strech out in her run and not confined to her crate.  She has shelter, lots of water and a few safe chew toys, including a nice meaty bone.  I know I just started with her and I should just be more patient.

For all you who participate in schutzhund, at what age do you start letting a puppy get used too an outdoor kennel?

Thanks, again for all the replies.

No, My Pups have always gone outside to live from 8 to 10 weeks old Done this for over 57 years no problems
They have always come from the Kennel they were born in to the Kennel and run i have for them at home,
Wrap a Old Clock in a Blanket, Metal one is best then put it next to the Pup in its basket inside the kennel it will cuddle up thinking it is its mothers Heartbeat, I have never had any problems at
Make sure it has plenty of shade other than that if it whines or crys just ignore it Do not go out to it no matter what but watch it from a point it cannot see you to see all is well It will stop and fall asleep, Never go out to it even once, Steel yourself against this, hard it may be but it is to live outside and that is it
And i am not a cold hearted old Bugger, just realistic, and i have never had a dog live in the house all the time in all those years so i am qualified to say and it will be a happy healthy Pup after the first couple of weeks so stick it out
Its coat will shine and you and the Pup will be happy
My New Pup i am looking after at the moment for the owner cried for the first night and it was okay after that,
My New Pup  coming in July will have to face the same thing, it will have the Pups kennel i am looking after, But it is a part of keeping dogs i know the outcome is good for the Pup after it settles in so i do not think about it after all these years
It will be hard to give back the Pup i am looking after, He is an intelligent little Guy, but it is life and i will see him hopefully at the training Club

SchH dogs do not have to be put on a kennel. Some of the best I know live indoors.

I have a dogie door. The stay in crates when I'm at work, and have the run of the place when I'm home. If they are too playful, I send them out side for an hour or two. One will notice that door is closed and stand at it and cry the whole time. After 10  years, she just wants to stay by your side...(Aussie)......I would much rather keep an eye on them then keep them in a crate where someone could steal them when I'm not looking.
