Here is a head shot of two pups one I know will be Blk/Tan but is the other one on the left a Bi or Blk/Tan?

I am going to say black and tan. Since there is some tan above the eyes. I believe in order for the pup to be a true bi color there is no coloring on the face, neck or body....just a small amout on the legs.
Cute pups by the way.

I'll say blk/tan, not bi.

I agree with you jyl, but it's amazing how many breeders call a blk/tan a bi.

I would say bl/tan, but Bicolors CAN have tan other places. It's amazing how people really don't know the difference. Black/tans are typically saddles and blankets.

Definitely not a black and tan.

it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to guess if a black/tan newborn or very young puppy will end up bicolor or black/tan when they are older. Newborn dark black/tans are born with the same markings as bicolors, most of the time. The only time I've found that bicolors can be (almost certainly) guessed as being bicolor, is when the pup is solid black at birth, other than the tan "vent". When they have tan markings, they could lighten up and become black/tan, or they could darken up later and be bicolor, lose their facial markings sometimes, or get brighter markings but still retain their "toemarks and tarheels" and still be bicolor. Black tans will lose their toe marks and tarheels - sometimes early, sometimes later. Basically when the pup develops more tan on their markings - "gets lighter" they will be black/tan - if they develop "muddies" and markings get darker - bicolor.
Hard to tell when they are this young what they will be.

mom is a black/tan, her sire is blk/tan , dam is black. So the mom is a black/tan, black recessive.
Sire is a sable. His dam's photo isn't on there, but I would assume sable as alot of her ancestry is. Based off of ONLY what is known, I still say black/tan.

This is the same puppy at six weeks and at seven months. I thought he was a black and tan, but he appears to be a bi-color. It is hard to see in this picture, but he has no tan eyebrows any more. His mother is Bi-color, and his father is blk/tan. They both carry black.
