Earlier than a year... for sure.
But it varies.

It seems that most of dog training, breeding and raising has "vaires, depending on the individule". That is just so frustraing. I gues if all dogs were exactly the same everyone could be the best!

They said Hero barked the whole way from his kennel to the first airport, he barked the whole time at his layover house and, he was crazy barking when I picked him up from the airport. He was completely horse and his breath was raspey for 2 weeks. I haven't been able to break him of this yet.

Now 6 months later, Hero barks continualy when he's crated, especially when the other dogs are able to run free. He also barks continually if he is free and the other dogs are in crates........there isn't a way of winning.

Any suggestions on how to correct this behavior?

Sitasmom, you have my sympathy. Here are some options for fixing barking problems:

1. Shock bark collar. The Tritronics collar has a fairly mild shock at the lowest level but does not go high enough for some dogs. The Dogtra collar hurts a lot more than the Tritronics collar and sometimes works when the Tritronics collar fails.

2. Citronella bark collar. This can work extremely well with some dogs. Some smart dogs learn that if they bark long enough, the citronella will be emptied out.

3. Sonic bark collar, which makes an irritating noise when the dog barks. This one rarely works, but it's sometimes very effective.

4. Bark softening surgery to turn down the bark volume so you (and your neighbors) can live with the barking. There's no such thing as debarking, in the sense of surgery that makes it impossible for the dog to bark, but this is another name for bark softening surgery.

Good luck!

I have had some success this weekend;

Hero is crated and starts barking
I tell him to hush
He continues to bark
I run to his crate screaming and yelling and kick it and once again tell him to hush and walk away
(he shows no sign if fear by this crazy behavior)
He is quite for a few minutes
before he starts barking again, I praise him let him out and pet him
After a few minutes we repeat the whole process
Each time he's quite for a bit longer............

It seems crazy, but its working..........He almost want to know if I'm serious about wanting him to be quiet........

It's not crazy at all. Sometimes the up close and personal touch works best. Remember what dogs do when they want to stop another dog's behavior--they growl and bark up a storm and put on an aggressive display, which is what you're doing. Hope it continues to help.

He was quite in his crate for a full 30 minutes before I let him out. AND I was in another room....No screaming and kicking the crate today.........As soon as I let him out he started crying.....but just for a minute........

He's such a silly puppy some times.............

We are making progress.

It's not crazy Sitasmom, It's counter-conditioning. you rewarded him for not doing the unwanted behavior. He is smart he learned quickly.

Good for you!
