Would those of you with experience or expertise with these two methods of evaluating hips remind me of the pros and cons?  My youngster is approaching two years and I must make plans soon.

Why not   do both at the same time??  We do both when we do prelimanry and if the PennHip is above the Median we do not redo at 2 years of age.  The only one I redid PennHip-upgraded from Fair to Good with OFA and the PenHip stayed the same:))

Vikki how did re-doing the penhip upgrade the OFA?  Did you send in the results of the penhip to OFA???
I just had my 2 year old x-rayed and sent them off to OFA.  I'm now awaiting their answer but considered doing Penhip.

MVF,

If you are waiting for the dog to turn 2 (24) months to do this procedure you can have them do both. Tell the vet you want shots for OFA and they'll do both at the same time.

My vet charges $350 for OFA and $240 for OFA and PennHip. I know it sounds strange but he helped develep PennHip and encourages it. So what the heck.

Terri,

It had nothing to do with OFA.  Just an example of how OFA can change-but PennHip gives a much better reading.

Thanks, folks!

You might want to contact the USA office and ask for the article that was written a few months back, the author Yvette goes into detail and comparison of the various methods for xrays and evaluations. Very informational article.

IMO Penn Hips is a lot more accurate, because it is objective (precisely measured parameters, two positions) while OFA is subjective. Unfortunately Penn Hip adds another $240. to the bill, is not accepted for the Breed Survey and the general puppy-buying public has never heard of it. I will only submit x-rays to the SV in most instances from now on. (Total about $500. incl vet bill) but if I suspect a borderline call, and can afford it, and plan to breed the dog, I would prefer to have Penn Hip done as well, just for my own info as a breeder. Never too much info when you are breeding dogs...

I KNOW how fond MVF is of OBJECTIVE information. LOL I suspect it comes, standard equipment, with every nearly every economics professor? ;-)

My vet does OFA and PennHip for $240.00 total.. I have an appointment for July 1. This is the third dog that I have had both done on. There are a lot of Penn vets around Philly. So it is a competitive issue I guess.
