My question is:  Will a Male German Shepherd with GOOD HIPS breed with a Female German Shepherd with GOOD HIPS, will one or two or maybe some of the pups have EXCELLENT HIPS?  I know that it depends on the mother's side & father side, and the ancestors.

Another question is:  German Shepherd male with Excellent HIPS breed with a German Shepherd Female with GOOD HIPS, will some of the pups have excellent hips?  How many?

I am not concern about colors.  I know it is just the icing of it.  Red Sable Male German Shepherd bred with a Black Sable German Shepherd, will some of the pups be red sable & some will be black sable?  Or, the colors be RED BLACK SABLE?

Thank you for looking and answering these questions.

hips are a coin toss.  breeding good rating dogs basically just lets you know the parents had good hips,  not that they will produce it.

the sable question,  you can get all colors of sables, dark sables, red sables, lighter sables,  even a blk/tan or black is possible.  just depends on whats behind the parents.

Thank you for such quick answers.  I will look into it some more.  The Black Sable Highlights of Red has black pencil markings on the legs, and the toes.  I know it is Black Recessive.  The Tip of the furs are black.  Some of the Tips of furs are sable.

If you OFA  prelim  your dog say at 18 months and they show (just say, GOOD) do you think your dogs hips would change in the next 6 months?

The Black Sable has Good HIPS & Normal Elbows.  She is almost 4 years old.

The mother German Shepherd is:  Black & Red.  The Father is Sable.

Your dog JRANSOM looks like my dog.  Beautiful Dog you have, JRANSOM

I can only answer the question about changes between 18 months and 24 months: the answer is YES, a small percentage of dogs show a decline in their hips between those two ages.  A larger percentage decline from 12 to 24 months, naturally, and a much larger percentage decline between puppyhood xrays and OFA.

Hello,

I think if the hips were as simple as breeding normal to normal we would have gotten rid of the hip displaysia a long time ago.  I feel there is also a nutritional and environmental factor in this also.  I think that if you start with normal parents that are fed a species appropriate diet(raw), feed the puppy a species appopriate diet (raw), don't let the dog get obese, and don't allow the dog to live on concrete you can increase your odds of having normal hips.

Thank you for answering my questions, MVF, and Cheryl.  How many % does it take to get a red sable when the female is black sable with highlights of red?

Those cursed hips!

We have a puppy out of 'a' rated parents with a relatively low ZW- I think it was 87, maybe lower. By all indications the litter should have had good hips but Nature intervened and our pup turned out dysplastic. You probably have a much better chance of good hips when you breed only good hips together but you can never really predict how those genes ultimately combine.
