Alrite here is my second post.

I have a working line bitch that has been otherwise sweet and loving and never aggressive towards us. Her last heat cycle was on Oct. 4 of 2008 so she is due any day to come in heat. I have been told that she becomes extremely protective of her master (me) and being she is already bitchy and dominant at times, well lately she has become worse. She almost bite my oldest son twice (was not cornerned or anything) he stepped outside in back with me and she got him twice just no skin since I grabbed her to pull her back. Once while he was facing her and the second while he was about to go back indoors. He is a K9 handler so is used to getting bit but this scared the crap out of me. Then she growled at my youngest son (he is 19 and he helps me with the dogs on a daily basis) and she surprised him with that behavior. So my question is to those with working line dogs, do any of you have females that when in heat they cannot be around anyone else except you until this passes? Once heat cycle is gone, they are back to normal and their loving self?  I usually deal with showline and this is a behavior I don't deal with.

Once last thing when I purchased this bitch, she was being held by 2 young children, probably 8 or 9 and my friend and I just walked right up to her and she just wagged her tail and loved on us. We were total strangers to her, so I'm baffled.

Again any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Debbie

I forgot to put her pedigree, maybe it will shed some light if you see the dogs in her pedigree. I have been told that her sire and dam are very serious, hard dogs.

Hi Debbie, mine has not had this type of reaction when in heat. Astra had issues after a heat with false preg. due to hormone dump. She would pull all the covers off the beds and bring to a closet and nested in them for days. Jami went thru her first heat with no issues. She was alittle less focused during training but that was it. Hormones can play funny things in bitches, the nesting part with Astra became a big problem because she would not work, I spayed her because I did not buy her to breed, just work. After spaying she was just as high drive as ever. If this is the only time that you dog is not thinking clearly and you are not breeding her, maybe spay would be in the cards for her. I hope this helps. Always, Cee

Well I think the problem is that my female is just trying to show me she is alpha (and that's not going to happen). I had a friend come over that is alot tougher than I am (she had to be she owns an extrememly tough female bitch). Well she and her son came over and my female lost it as usual. So my friend had a "Coming to Jesus talk with my bitch"  and after a good stare down and some serious words my bitch decided my friend was the bigger bitch and the fight was over. No problem at all taking her out of the crate and now she is on her way to my friends for a few days. I could not believe the change in attitude, so I guess I am just going to have to be tougher on her and show her I am the alpha. Like I said I have showline dogs and they are so different, this girl is so sweet and loving and has awesome drives,   I really want to get some titles on her so this was important to me.

Thanks guys,
Debbie
