Actually.....

The cotton ball remedy IS a valid one, and IS used by veterinarians--so it's worth saving that info for use in an emergency, and if you've got a pup, or dogs that have a habit of getting into things, it's a good idea to keep the materials on hand.  It does work, and can spare your dog having to undergo exploratory surgery.  It is for use ONLY when you KNOW for sure that the dog has ingested a sharp foreign object and are addressing the situation BEFORE the dog is showing any signs of abdominal distress--if you don't discover the dog has eaten glass, straight pins, etc. until the dog is already in pain or otherwise displaying symptoms of being unwell, don't waste time with this: they need to go straight to the vet without further delay.

Can't speak as to the efficacy of the marshmallow root suggestion, however.
