Hi Guys,

Do any of you know of any websites that have K9 wash outs that are offered to the public?

RDH:

What do you mean "wash outs" The biggest share of dogs that don,t work are more often then not washed out because the handler or training director havent found the driving force that motavates the animal... But I,ve never seen a web site for washed out dogs.

There are code words for this.

A dog can be advertised as "single purpose"  meaning he cannot do protection but can use his nose.

Or as a dog for a beginner.  Or a dog who will be a good companion.  Or a dog for obedience.  Or even a dog for "club" sport (meaning "not high level sport").

Whether those dogs will actually be good for any of those things is not actually always known -- what is known is that they washed out on protection work.

Bob,
I seen a ad a few months ago on the malinois base...i can't find it right now. There is a K9 facility in Indiana that had some wash out dogs for sale. Example: There was a malinois who was a contractor for government service but had a pinch nerve.

MVF i heard dogs that have certain issues in training are considered wash outs. For example a dog that has issues with slick floors can be wash out of the academy. what is known is that they washed out on protection work.---I guess its pointless to investigate it now...I was interested in finding a dog for PSA.

Stuff happens that we cannot control. I know of a few dogs  mine included that were given up due to some personal  problem or other circumstance.  At times people have job changes, injuries etc that may preclude a person from training.  For some a dog may just be a little too much for them.  People always talk about wanting a real Hard tough dominate dog until you have one.  Then you can't board them becacuae either people are afraid of them, or break out of kennels or loads of other wonderful problems and then the owner gets rid of the dog because it is too much for them.

I also agree with Bob at times youu have to change your program for the dog

i don't know of a website though

Jeff --People always talk about wanting a real Hard tough dominate dog until you have one.   you have no idea..lol my friend is crazy about these dogs. She only want to own hard tough dominate dogs for high competition. I don't want something overly dominant. I don't know if you heard of a dutch shepherd from Holland now in USA name Arko ...that is one dominant serious dog I have heard of by many people.

RDH - You're right that some police dogs in training wash out for idiosyncratic reasons such as avoidance behaviors (slick floors are definitely one).  If the dog has strong drives they will usually advertise those dogs as good for PP or sport!

MVF that is awesome! Yeah my intention is PSA so I'll look into it.

Often a "power dog"  is not a real good points dog  Often people dont understand that..The power dogs can be a whole lot of fun but at times a pain in the butt as well..

I have trained quite a bit in PSA. If you are serious about it, I would not look for a "Police Washout" If it washed out of a K9 program, it most likely will not make a good PSA dog. there are exceptions of course.

Many active police k9's out  can't cut it in PSA so you are going down the wrong road IMO.
