Good News... for people in Hyderabad and surrounding areas.
HYDERABAD: Two animal quarantine stations were set up at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad, on Wednesday.
In accordance with Live Stock Importation Act (9 of 1898), the Union government has issued a notification declaring Rajiv Gandhi International Aiport as a port for disembarkation of pets (dogs and cats) along with accompanied baggage as per baggage rules, laboratory animals (rats, mice and guinea pigs) for research and development purposes and grand parent stock of poultry.
The first quarantine station is located at International Arrivals, while another has been set up at Cargo Satellite Building. GMR-Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), which runs the airport, has provided 10 square metre (sq mtr) space at international arrivals and 40 sq. mtr space at Cargo Satellite Building for these stations.
Till recently, passengers and organisations were using the services of Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and Chennai airports for bringing in animals.
The facility was inaugurated by ministry of agriculture, joint secretary, Arvind Kaushal who said that in a week's time export of animals would also be allowed from the airport.
The state government has allocated 10 acres of land adjacent to the airport for creation of animal quarantine and certification services. A veterinary doctor would also be provided at the airport for quarantine and certification services.
